Fantastic, such a shame that it was cancelled.

Interestingly I wonder why in the last para-foil stage the crew cabin wasn't just ejected for land
Would have saved a lot of space and weight of the cutes.

X-38 will always be sad to me. It was close. Of all the things cut from ISS, this was one that sho
indispensible.

We wouldn't be having talk of a gap right now, if X-38 had led to a lifeboat. But things being wh
much easier for politicians and the media to blame all ISS delays on Russia, in compelete ignora

Senior Member When i started working at ESA in 2000 I almost switched from manned spaceflight to the CRV/X
due to better "leads"
one part of me is obviously glad I didn't, but another part...first hermes, now this, the navy flyb
nothing to "fly" except rockets.....

Oh and fransonuk....some guys will get it, if you convert the word baby, to puppy

Thanks! Truly one of the biggest let downs when it comes to the ISS Program. If I am not mista
have been 1 year into X-38 service to the ISS, as I believe it was supposed to be ready by 2008

To think if we could go back and do it all over...no worries of a gap and I am sure the X-38 could
into a CEV.

Senior Member At the time I thought the spacecraft was a great thing, but now I am not so sure that going with
body was such a good idea. The TPS would be exposed to the MMOD environment for probably
it really was only an LEO lifeboat/possible taxi, so there was not room to grow into an interstella
had gone with a capsule design instead of the X-38, we would already have the ISS taxi that is n
launch to ISS now in 2015 at the earliest (although to get to a lunar design there would have ha
major redesign)

X-38/CRV would not have eliminated the gap. If you look at the cutaway showing the crew, they
towards the nose. This is perfect for reentry, but worst-case for nose-first launch. So, without se
you could only launch a crew on a CRV upside-down (better, but still not good for aborts) or side
to have a sizable SM for extra life-support and RCS. All-in-all, you'd need an entirely separate ve
X-38/CRV and OSP were two separate programs.

The cancellation was in two steps, the operational vehicle, the CRV project got killed first in 200

The Orion RCS, SLS US RCS, and a commercial capsule are all set to use direct descendants. In
engines were used in the initial phases of Orion testing.

Redudancy docked to the ISS is also useful though. Too much money to be viable, but if your do
MMOD, and you need to evac.....But yes, the chances are slim at best.

V201 has been donated to the city of Santa Rosa, Texas and the Texas State Technical College A
department is doing the restoring.

Apparently Santa Rosa wants to display it on a 17-acre sports complex and fair grounds
