Special Stitches
Popcorn: Make 5 dc in same st, remove hook from loop and insert from front to back of 1st dc and then into
dropped loop and pull through. Ch 1 to close. This closing chain is not counted in any chains you are asked to
make after the popcorn. To make a starting popcorn, simply start with a standing dc or ch 3 as your 1st st.
Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch or space and pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into same
stitch or space and pull up a loop 3 times (9 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 9 loops, and ch 1
to close. As with the popcorn, this closing chain is not counted as a stitch.
Long Sc or Spike Stitch: Insert hook into stitch or space one or more rounds below next st as instructed and
pull up a loop to level of current round, then yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
Crossed Dc: Skip one stitch and dc in next st. Working in front of dc just made, make a dc into skipped stitch.
Cable Stitch: Skip one st and dc in next 3 stitches. Working in front of 3 dc’s just made, insert hook into
skipped stitch, pull up a loop to the level of last dc made, yarn over pull through 2 loops, then yarn over and
pull through last 2 loops on hook.
Starting Tr Cluster: Make a standing tr but do not complete the final yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
With 2 loops remaining on hook, yarn over twice, insert hook into same stitch or space, yarn over and pull
through 2 loops twice (3 loops on hook), yarn over twice, insert hook into same stitch or space, yarn over
and pull through 2 loops twice (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. Shown in Round 40.
Tr Cluster: Make a cluster of 3 tr in same st.
Folding Sc: Insert hook into back loop of next tr and into back loop of corresponding stitch in
previous round, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through two loops. Shown in Round 4.

Instructions
1. Make a magic ring, ch 1 and make 12 sc into ring. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st but DO NOT fasten off or pull
up the centre.
Stitch Count: 12 sc.
2. Ch 1 and, working over Round 1, make 24 Lsc into ring and join to 1st Lsc. Pull up magic ring, fasten off,
and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 24 Lsc.
3. Make a standing tr in FL of any Lsc, fltr in each stitch. Join to standing tr with a sl-st in the FL.
Stitch Count: 24 tr.

4. Ch 1 and work a folding sc [refer to Special Stitches] in each stitch around. Join to 1st folding sc, fasten off,
and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 24 folding sc.
5. Join with a standing dc in any folding sc. Ch 1 and (dc in next st, ch 1) 23 times. Join to standing dc with a
sl-st.
Stitch Count: 24 dc, 24 ch-1 spaces.
6. Sl-st into next ch-1 space, ch 1 and sc in same space, (ch 3, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 space) 23 times, ch
3, and join to 1st sc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count: 24 sc, 24 ch-3 spaces.

7. Ch 1 and sc, hdc, sc in the next ch-3 space.
(Skip the next st and sc, hdc, sc in the next ch-
3 space) 23 times. Join to 1st sc, fasten off,
and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 48 sc, 24 hdc.

Total: 72.
8. In this Round you will be making fpdtr into the sc from Round 6 and making all other stitches into
Round 7.
Join with a standing sc in the sc at the end of any group of 3 stitches made in the ch-3 spaces [which will fall
directly above a sc from Round 6]. Count around 2 more sc from Round 6 and mark this st.
Now, also mark every 4th sc from Round 6. You should have 6 markers.
*Sc in next sc from Round 7. Fpdtr, [yo3 times] around next marked st to the left, hdc in next st of Round 7
[which will be behind the fpdtr you just made], 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc2tog, [which will be
the 2 sc at the beginning and end of the groups of 3 above the marked st]. Hdc in next st, 2 dc in each of next
2 sts, hdc in next st, fpdtr around same sc as beginning of group, sc in next st.* Repeat from * to * 5 more
times, omit the last sc. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count: 12 sc, 6 sc2tog, 24 hdc, 48 dc, 12 fpdtr. Total: 102.
Don't worry if your work is curling up at this point! Can you see the hearts starting to take shape?
9. Ch 1 and sc in the same st [the 1st sc from last round], sc in next 2 sts [the sc and fpdtr], *skip next st
[hidden by fpdtr], hdc in next st, (2 dc in next st) twice, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next
st, dc in next st, (2 dc in next st) twice, hdc in next st, skip next st, sc in next 4 sts, [which are a fpdtr, sc, sc,
fpdtr].* Repeat from * to * 5 more times omitting the last 3 sc. Join to 1st sc, fasten off, and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 30 sc, 24 hdc, 60 dc.

Total: 114.
10. Join with a standing hdc to last hdc

of any group, skip next st, fpdc around

12. Join with a standing fpdc around the last fpdc of any heart group, *sc in next 2 sc, in next heart group
fpdc around fpdc from Round 10, skip the next st, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, dc
in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, dc in next st, hdc
in next 3 sts, skip the last st, fpdc around fpdc from Round 10.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times omit last
fpdc. Join with sl-st to 1st fpdc.
Stitch Count: 18 sc, 48 hdc, 96 dc, 12 fpdc.

Total: 174.
13. Sc2tog in next 2 sc, *skip fpdc, sc in next 25 sts, skip fpdc, sc2tog in next 2 sc* Repeat from * to * 5 more
times omitting the last sc2tog. Join to 1st sc, fasten off, and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 150 sc, 6 sc2tog.

Total: 156.

14. Join with a standing bphdc in the 2nd sc of any heart
group, bphdc in next 9 sts,
this is a little bit tricky, but take it slow..
Bpsc3tog, so that's hook through, yo and pull up a loop,
hook through next st, yo and pull up a loop, hook
through 3rd st, yo and pull up a loop yo and pull through
all 4 loops on your hook.
(Bphdc in next 10 sts, bpsc3tog,) 11 times. Join to 1st
bphdc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count: 120 bphdc, 12 bpsc3tog.
Total: 132.
You will now see that the points of the central star are
raised in a 3D effect.
15. Skip st with sl-st join, ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts,
sc3tog, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sc3tog.* Repeat from * to *
5 times. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count: 24 sc, 12 sc3tog, 36 hdc, 72 dc.
Total: 144.
16. If using the same colour ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), if using new colour join in any stitch with a standing dc
and dc in every stitch around. Join to 1st dc, fasten off, and secure ends.
Stitch Count: Total: 144 dc.

17. Fan Round. In this round you will be making a variation of the fan stitch, you will sl-st, ch 2 and then make
3 dc into the same stitch. Starting with the 1st sl-st 2 sts to the right of the sc3tog in Round 15 above the
point of the inner star, this will then align the outer star with the inner one. I have used two colours to add
more texture to the design , but you may choose to only use one.
Join colour 1 with a sl-st in starting stitch described above, ch 2 and make 3 dc into same stitch, skip 2 and sl-
st using 2nd colour, to pull through, lay your 1st colour on the top of your work and make the next 3 sts over
it, so that you have no yarn showing at the back of your work as it is neatly tucked away under your stitches.
Ch 2, 3 dc in same st and repeat all the way around.
Sl-st BOTH colours to 1st sl-st at base of 1st fan, pull tails through to back of work and secure ends.
Don't worry about the wobbly effect, that will straighten out in the next Round or two.
If you are using 2 colours then just make sure to keep the tension as you change colours, give the colour you
are about to join a little tug to make sure it sits snugly beneath the stitches you have just made.
Stitch Count: 48 fans, Total: 144 dc.
18. You will not be working in any of the ch-2 in this round, ONLY the 3 dc in each fan. Join with a standing sc
in the 1st dc of any fan, hdc in next dc, and dc in 3rd dc of same fan, repeat all the way around, sc in 1st dc,
hdc in 2nd dc and dc in 3rd dc. Join to 1st sc and fasten off, and secure ends.
Stitch Count: 48 sc, 48 hdc, 48 dc. Total: 144.

19. Join with a standing hdc in the sc 2 fans back from the point of the inner star, to line the outer star points
up with the inner ones. Hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat around
from * to * join to standing hdc with sl-st.
Stitch Count: 168 hdc.
20. Ch 1 and sc in same st, which is the first hdc after a 2 hdc and sits above the sc in Round 18,* hdc in next
st, dc in next st, tr in next 2 sts, make a fpdtr around the dc from Round 18, this is the dc in the 3rd dc of fan,
tr in next 4 sts, fpdtr around same dc as before so that they form a V, tr in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in
next st, sc in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * 11 more times, omit last sc. Join to 1st sc, fasten off, and secure
ends.
Stitch Count: 24 sc, 24 hdc, 24 dc, 96 tr, 24 fpdtr.
Total: 192.

21. Join with a standing dc in tr after 1st fpdtr of any group, make a crossed dc by making a dc in the top of
the fpdtr in front of the dc just made, (skip next st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st) 3 times, *skip next 2 sts,
make 5 tr in next st, make 4 tr in next st, skip next 3 sts, dc in next and dc in last skipped st, make 4 more
crossed dc.* Repeat from * to * 11 more times, omit last 4 crossed dc. Join to standing dc, fasten off, and
secure ends.
Stitch Count: 60 crossed dc, (120 dc), 108 tr.
Total: 228.
Hint: the crossed dc's will all fall into the tr & fpdtr you made in Round 20 and the tr groups will all be made in
the sc from Round 20.

22. Join with standing sc in 8th st of any tr group, *fpdtr around fpdtr from Round 20, sc in next 12 sts, fpdtr
around fpdtr from Round 20, sc in next 7 sts.* Repeat from * to * 11 times omitting last sc. Join to standing
sc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count: 228 sc, 24 fpdtr.
Total: 252.
23. Ch 1 and hdc in same st, hdc in each st around. Join to 1st hdc. Fasten off, and secure ends.
Stitch Count: Total: 252 hdc.
24. Find the hdc made into any fpdtr to the left (right for left handed) of a crossed dc group, count 4 sts
forward and in the next st make a starting popcorn st.
Which will be central to the group of 9 tr in Round 21, as shown by the markers in the photo.
See Special Stitches, don't forget the ch-1 to close your popcorn and make it pop!
*Ch 1, skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, dc in 2nd skipped st to make a crossed dc, make 8 more crossed dc, ch 1,

Stitch Count: Total: 12 popcorn, 108 crossed dc (216 dc), 24 ch-1 spaces.

25. Join with a standing sc in last dc of crossed dc before any popcorn * fpdtr around fpdtr from Round 22, sc
in popcorn, sc in ch 1 space, fpdtr around fpdtr, sc in next 18sts, * Repeat from * to * 11 more times omit
last sc,. Join to standing sc with a sl-st.
Stitch Count:
240 sc, 24 fpdtr.
Total: 264.
26. Ch 3 [counts as 1st dc], dc in next 2 sts, dc in st before starting ch making your 1st cable st, (skip next st,
dc in next 3 sts, dc in skipped st) 65 times [making 65 cable st]. Join to top of ch 3. Fasten off, and secure
ends.
Stitch Count: 66 cable st.
Total: 264 dc.

27. Make a standing sc in the stitch above any popcorn, *fptr around fpdtr, fptr around next fpdtr, sc in next
22 sts) 12 times, omit last sc. Join to standing sc with a sl-st .
Stitch Count: 264 sc, 24 fptr. Total: 288.
28. Ch 3, *make 3 tr in next st [which will be the 1st fptr], ch 1, 3 tr in next st, [2nd fptr], dc in next 12 sts, hdc
in next 10 sts, sc in next 26 sts, hdc in next 10 sts, dc in next 12 sts.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omit
last dc. Join to top of ch-3. Fasten off, and secure ends. You now have 4 corners.
Stitch Count: Per side 26 sc, 20 hdc, 24 dc, 6 tr. Total: 304.

5. Sl-st into ch-2 corner space, ch 1, and *in ch-2 corner space (hdc, ch 2, hdc), (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in ch-2
space, hdc in next 2 sts and over ch-3 space from Round 3, catching the chain in the back of the st, 2 hdc in
next ch-2 space) 33 times, hdc in last st.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to 1st hdc with a sl-st.
6. Sl-st into ch-2 corner space, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, *dc in each st across [234], in ch-2 corner
space (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omit last corner. Join to top of ch-3. Fasten off,
and secure ends.
Stitch Count: Per side 238 dc. Total: 952 dc.

Hint: over the next 7 rounds you will be making "friends holding hands".
Rounds 7, 9, 11 and 13 form the background. Rounds 8 and 10 form the bodies. Round 12 form the heads, I
suggest using the same colour for Rounds 7/9/11 and a contrasting colour for Rounds 8/10 and again a
separate colour for the heads in Round 12.
7. Join in any ch-2 corner space with a standing dc, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, *dc in next 2 sts, (ch 2, skip
next 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts) 33 times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, in ch-2 corner space (2 dc, ch 2, 2
dc).* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omit last corner. Join to standing dc. Fasten off, and secure ends.
8. [Legs] Join with a standing sc in any ch-2 corner space, (ch 2, sc) in same space, *sc in next 4sts, (working
in front of the ch-2 space, tr in next 2 skipped sts in Round 6, sc in next 5 sts) 34 times, in ch-2 corner space

space, tr in next 2 skipped sts in Round 8, make a fptr around the 3rd dc forward [to the left, or right for left

12. [Heads] Hint: the "heads" popcorn stitches all fall in the sc made into the 2nd tr of each "body".
Join in any ch-2 corner space with a standing dc, (ch 2, dc) in same space, *ch 7, skip next 8 sts, (in next st
make a popcorn, not forgetting to close with a ch 1, ch 6, skip next 6 sts) 33 times, make a popcorn in next st,

in front of the chain spaces and popcorns, dc in next 8 sts from round 11, (ch 1, skip popcorn, dc in next 6 sts)
34 times, dc in last 2 sts, in ch-2 corner space of Round 12 (sc, ch 2, sc).* Repeat from * to * 3 more times,
omit last corner. Join to standing sc. Fasten off, and secure ends. Pop "heads" through to front of work.

14. Join with a standing sc in any ch-2 corner space, (ch 2, sc) in same space, *picking up the chain as you
work, sc in next 9 sts, (sc in ch-1 space and through popcorn, picking up the chain as you work sc in next 6
sts) 34 times, sc in last 3 sts, in ch-2 corner space (sc, ch 2, sc).* repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to 1st
sc with a sl-st.
15. Sl-st into corner ch-2 space, (ch 5 [counts as dc plus ch 2], dc) in same space *dc in each st across, in ch-2
corner space (dc, ch 2, dc).* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omit last corner. Join to 3rd ch. Fasten off, and

16. In any ch-2 corner space (make a starting tr cluster, (ch 2, tr cluster)3 times, giving 4 tr clusters in same
ch-2 space. *(skip next 4 sts, in next st (tr cluster, ch 3, tr cluster)) 50 times, skip next 4 sts, in ch-2 corner
space ((tr cluster, ch 2) 3 times, tr cluster).* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omit last corner. Join to 1st
cluster. Fasten off, and secure ends.

Depending on the yarn you have chosen to work with, your work may or may not need blocking to give a
quality finished look. Personally I find with Stylecraft Special and Caron Simply Soft, washing at 30' and either
a cool tumble dry or drying flat is all that is needed to give your new afghan a beautiful soft feel and great
look.
