ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We sincerely express our deep sense of gratitude towards our respected
Prof. S.B.Sadgir mam for his valuable guidance, profound advice, persistent
Encouragement and help during the completion of this project work. He time to-
time helpful suggestion boosted us to complete this task successfully. He has
helped us in all possible way right from gathering the information to report
presentation.

We express our thanks to Prof. N.B. KARWA Head of civil Engineering

Department for their kind cooperation during my project work.

With deep sense of gratitude it thank to Principal Dr.K .V.CHANDRATRE

and management of Loknete Gopinathji Munde Institute of Engineering
Education & Research for providing all necessary facilities and their constant
encouragement and all those who directly or indirectly contributed to complete
this project work.
ROADSIDE ARBORICULTURE
AND TREES USED IN ARBORICULTURE
ROAD ARBORICULTURE
• Growing of trees along roadside is called as arboriculture
• Trees can be grown on both urban as well as rural roads
• The trees should be planted at least 12 m away from center line of
carriage way
• The basic aim of planting the trees away from centerline is to
maintain atleast equal to carriage way width at the level of crown
width at the level of crown of trees
The Benefits of Trees in Road Arboriculture

• Enhanced Aesthetics
• Trees beautify the roadside and create visually appealing landscapes.
• Air Quality Improvement
• Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and mitigate air
pollution.
• Noise Reduction
• Trees act as natural sound barriers, reducing traffic noise levels.
OBJECTIVES OF ROAD ARBORICULTURE
The trees are grown of road side to serve the following
objective
• To provide attractive landscape of road side
• To provide shape and comfort to road users and make journey
comfortable
• To prevent soil errosion from roadside roadside
• To reduce headlight glare during night driving by the planted
shurbs
• To intercept the annoying sound waves and fumes from road
vechiles by the planted trees
• To provide shed to road user
TREES SELECTION FOR ARBORICULTURE
Factors to consider
• The factors to consider when selecting trees, Including site
conditions, Intended purpose, Growth characteristics, and
maintenance requirements .
Native vs Non-Species
• The advantages and potential drawbacks of choosing native trees
species versus non-native species, with a focus on biodiversity
conservation and ecosystem resilience
The right tree in the right position is the key principle in roadside tree
planting, as the roadside environment is harsh. To fully realize the
benefits of roadside trees, tree species should be carefuly selected
according to the site’s typology, the hardness of the tree species, a clear
above and below ground site analysis, and the ability of the tree species
to improve drainage, trap dust, and reduce surface runoff. Selection
criteria are based on the medicinal, nutritional, economic and ecological
value of the trees, well as their adaptability, the cultural values
associated with specific tree species, and their ability to absorb carbon
dioxide.
TREES USED IN ARBRORICULTURE
Following are some of the most common varites of trees which
are planted on road side :
1) NEEM 9) KANJI
2) MANGO 10)AMALTAS
3) BANYAN
4) ARJUN
5) GULMOHAR
6) ASHOK
7) PIPAL
8) ARROO
PATTERNS OF TREE PLANTING
• Planting of trees usually done on both side of road of
highway
• Distance between two trees is the importance factor in
planting of tree and it depend on the nature and type of tree
and hence distance between them is varied from 10 to 18 m
• For normal tree for its normal height distance between trees
is 12 m
• Trees should be planted in stagger manner on both side of a
road as shown in fig
CARE OF TREES

• TRENCHES: A round trench about 2.5 m in diameter plan is dug

around the plant pit. Section of trench is trapezodial having about
40cm bed and 50 cm depth
• OPEN BRICK WORK GUARDS: It is constructed around trees, These
guard may be circular or square in plan. Thickness of tree guard is
kept one brick laid is heading
• THORNY TREES: Thorny trees can be planted around the planted
trees to protect them
• BARBED WIRE : In this system four wooden bullies are driven at four
FENCING corners around the tree pit and barbed wired wrap
around them
• BITUMEN DRUM : P.W.D. has lots of used bitumen drums at its
GUARDS possession
MAINTENCE OF TREES

WATERING : It is the main feature of tree maintenance. Method of

watering and interval of watering depends on Type of tree, Climatic
condition, Water avaibility.
HOEING: Soil around the tree stem should be kept loose. This helps
in fast growth of tree
PRUNING : It is the process which is useful for making trees to grow
straight and in compact form
PROTECTION FROM : plants which are likely to be affected by cold
FROST should be provided protection by covering
them by thatching
CONCLUSION

• Transformed a barren roadside into a picturesque boulevard with a

diverse range of trees. Implemented a beautification project that
improved the aesthetics of a major highway. Engaged local
communities in planting and caring for trees along a residential road.
