Non-verbal Cues

Choose two cultures from among the ASEAN countries and differentiate some of their
non-verbal messages. Get a partner and share at least three differences in their non-
verbal codes.

PHILIPPINES
 Mano or Pagmamano is done by
taking the hand of an elder and
tapping it on your forehead then
utter the words “mano po” in which
it is a way to show respect towards
them.
 Nodding and raising eyebrows with
a smile is a nonverbal cue in which
you’re greeting person in a casual
and quick way, means of
acknowledging that you saw
him/her.
 Pointing: Filipinos may point to
objects by puckering their lips and
moving their mouths in the direction
they are pointing to. Pointing with
the index finger is often understood
as an expression of anger.
INDONESIA
 When greeting a person in their
same gender, handshake is usually
being used.
 Pointing is done with the thumb
instead of the index finger which
means “good”.
 Holding the head higher than a
superior is not acceptable so
Indonesians may bow or nod their
heads lower in the presence of
elders and superiors.
