WHAT IS APOLLO 11?
The mission was sent to space on July 16, 1969, reached the surface
of the Moon on July 20 of that same year, and the next day it
managed to get two astronauts (Armstrong and Aldrin) to walk on
the lunar surface. The project began in July 1960, when the US
space agency NASA announced the program
REPEAT APOLLO 11'S
JOURNEY TODAY?
Honeycutt was among more than a dozen Apollo-era leaders and
contemporary space experts who agreed, in interviews, that changes in
American society have made the idea of getting humans to the Moon
much more difficult now than five decades ago.
WHY DID WE GO TO THE
MOON?
The motivation then, was the Cold War. The Soviet Union had
humiliated the United States by launching the first satellite in
1957 and then putting the first human into orbit in 1961. For a
world divided between East and West.
FLIGHT TIMELINE
The Apollo 11 mission lasted 8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, and
35 seconds; in total, just over 195 hours of travel during which
NASA engineers probably experienced some of the most
uncertain moments of all their lives. The journey was packed
with hundreds of phases and maneuvers, each one more
delicate than the last.
HOW DID GOING TO THE
MOON IMPACT SOCIETY?
At the most basic level, going to the Moon transformed our
understanding of how both the Moon and the Earth were formed
and of the dynamics of the solar system. Going to the Moon
inspired a whole generation maybe two generations of young
people to become scientists, engineers, and computer programmers.
