Learners in the Foundation Phase were given an opportunity to participate in a FEMSSISA Maths Olympiad
during the 3rd term. Those learners who chose to write the Olympiad, were challenged with tough and
advanced mathematical problems. Their critical thinking and problem-solving skills were certainly put to
the test. We are extremely proud of the courageous nature of these learners, and of their excellent
individual performances.
Our FP learners and educators had an opportunity to visit Crocworld on Wednesday, the 31st of August
2022. Everyone was delighted since there were Covid restrictions before that and schools were unable to
organize any outings/educational tours. The entire Foundation Phase experienced this for the first time in
their formal school years. Travelling by bus was fascinating for them and they could hardly contain
themselves. Our learners were actively involved in all activities guided by a wonderful Crocworld team.
Everyone was also looking forward to indulging in their “goodies”, packed by their parents. We can gladly
say our excursion was a success.

General Knowledge Quiz Report
A General Knowledge Quiz was also introduced to our learners in the last week of school. It is important
for learners to understand that every thought that they have, everything that they do, is an expression of
knowledge and information.
The Foundation Phase held a successful Fun Athletics Day on Friday, 9th September 2022. The event was
well-attended by parents and well-wishers. The learners took part in a variety of fun novelty events, shuttle
relays and flat races, which culminated in the inter-class tug-of-war which generated a lot of excitement.
Great fun was had by all. Thank you to the parents for their attendance, which motivated and spurred our
young athletes on. A big thank you to the SPS Team for making the day a special and memorable one for
both learners and parents.
We would like to congratulate the winning house, Neptune. All our participants were very enthusiastic
and did a great job in this quiz. Well done to all the participants who were involved. Every competitor
should be proud of their achievements.

Conquesta Olympiad 2022
Our Senior Primary learners were provided the opportunity to participate in the Conquesta Olympiad. We chose to
enter only the Mathematics, English, Afrikaans and General Knowledge Olympiads, which took place in Term 3. There
was a lot of excitement associated with writing these papers, as it was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic,
that our learners were participating in the Conquesta Olympiad. The learners were enthusiastic about being exposed
to the various types of questions. Learners, who have participated in the Conquesta Olympiad, will each receive a
certificate, which will reflect the percentage they achieved in each subject.
This was the first year that the Grade 4 and Grade 5 learners embarked on an excursion together. They
visited the Tin Shed-Adventure Course, which is located in Kloof. The learners were extremely excited and
really enjoyed the experience, noting that this was their first excursion since the Covid-19 Pandemic. They
were provided the opportunity to participate in various obstacle courses and team building exercises.
Learners from both grades worked well with each other, and it was pleasing to witness the camaraderie
displayed amongst them.
On the 7th of September, the Grade 6’s embarked on a splendid excursion to Boot Camp SA, in Durban.
Despite the cold temperatures and being separated from their best friends, learners eagerly participated
in all activities, resulting in many new friendships being built. A variety of activities were enjoyed at Boot
Camp SA. Their favourite was the obstacle course. The excursion proved to be an amazing learning
experience for the Grade 6 learners. It was an adventure that will forever remain in their memories.
The Grade 7’s went to Sweetdale Camp in Ramsgate. All learners had an incredible time. A variety of
activities were enjoyed at Sweetdale. A few favourites included: the zip line, high ropes, and the climbing
tower. Session one of the day was followed by a scrumptious meal, which kept the learners energized for
session two. They enjoyed a lovely sit-down lunch in the beautifully decorated Packshed Restaurant. The
excursion proved to be an amazing learning experience for the Grade 7 learners. Many fears were
conquered, and great life lessons were learnt. It will certainly be a lasting memory of their final year at
Scottburgh Primary.
On Thursday, the 22 September, Scottburgh Primary School hosted its inaugural Career Day for the Grade 7
learners. Guests from various career fields, as well as selected learners, spoke to the learners about their chosen
fields. The learners were excited at the opportunity of being exposed to the many different careers available to
them.
Sport
This term was a very busy sporting term. Some of the major highlights include:
➢ Inter-School Cross Country: 60 of our athletes were placed in the top 10. Out of 14 groups, we achieved
7 first positions, 7 second positions and 6 third positions. Our Under 7 girls and boys’ teams took a clean
sweep, achieving top 3 positions. Well done to the athletes and coaches.

Inter- House and Inter-School Athletics:
➢ Inter-School Athletics: Besides achieving top 3 positions in various individual events, the highlight was
our relay results. Our school achieved first position in 6 out of the 8 relay races. Hard work and training
paid off. A huge thank you to the coaches and well done to our star athletes.
Chess:
➢ With the assistance from our professional coach and staff, our chess is growing and more learners are taking to
this wonderful game. Our school team played in a Chess Festival and did extremely well.
Well done to all learners who participated in these sporting activities this term. You all did our school proud.
Extra Murals
All activities were well attended and we encourage all learners to participate.
Please inform the school if your child will be leaving our school at the end of the year. This will assist in
planning for the new year, as we have so many requests for new admissions for 2023.
Communication
Parents: Thank you to our parents for always being so appreciative, through the positive emails that you
send. It is always good to know that our hard work is being noticed.
I encourage all parents to first communicate with the Class/Subject Teacher, Departmental Head or Deputy
Principal, before setting up an appointment to see the Principal.
I encourage parents to make sure that learners are at school every day. Please try to plan family vacations
during the school holidays. Parents are reminded to send a written note with their child to school, indicating
the reason for the child’s absence. Please take note that if a learner is absent for an assessment, the DBE
requires a medical note to be submitted. Parents requesting leave for their child, must do so in writing,
to principal@sps.org.za
Important Dates
Please see the attached Term 4 Calendar. Please note that this is only a draft copy and may change. If there
are any changes, an amended copy will be sent out to parents in the new term.
Thank you for your continued support and have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Yours sincerely,
Mr S. Naidoo
Principal
