Instructions
HINT: As you read the chapters and complete the assignments, think
about the most important events that impacted history during that
time. I have provided an outline for you to help with brainstorming
and organizing your thoughts under Supplemental Information.
Evaluate four successes and four failures from the Age
of Exploration to the Declaration of Independence
Exam One (Chapters 1-4)
Topic (Make sure that you cover the entire timeline.)
This is worth 20% of your overall grade. Please do not
wait until the last minute.
Timeline (1500-1776)
For the chapters stated, you need to complete the following,

PROVIDE FOUR SUCCESSES AND FOUR FAILURES –


Analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic,
cultural, and global forces of this period of Texas history.

Components: Essays should use normal margins, 12-pt Arial or Times New Roman
Context, Purpose, font, and double-spaced; your essay should be about 1000-1300 words
and Audience in length; your essay should be in paragraph form with an
introduction paragraph containing your thesis statement (or
argument), body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
(Essays are graded on content, not length.)

Save your essay in a Word document with your last name and exam
number. For example, Swift-Exam 1
You must use the textbook for your answers and include page
numbers in the paragraph to support your answers, even if it is in
Required Sources your own words. Do not use the internet.

You must cite page numbers of your sources.


Students will write original responses to provided essay questions for
each section. All essays will be checked for similarities by
Turnitin.com. Any plagiarism will receive a zero.
Please make sure that you clearly state the four successes

Content Start your paragraph topic sentence with the failure or success
Development that you plan to argue in that paragraph and stay on point in the
paragraph. I should not have to guess at what point you are making.
Each paragraph should be a complete thought and make a point using
facts to support your topic sentence. Please make sure that your
argument is sound.
All general statements must be supported by facts and include an
analysis of the material. Please remember to stay focused and
defend your thesis rather than just listing events. Please leave out
Supporting personal opinions or feelings. Please be sure to show change over time
Evidence and cause & effect. WHY did these events happen?
Please do not include numerous or long quotes in your essay - they are
just fillers. I want to see your analysis of the material.

The structure and style of writing should demonstrate attention to the

Clarity – Clearly state the success or failure in the topic sentence
of your paragraph. Try to write in chronological order for clarity.
Use vocabulary that can easily be understood by the audience and is

work is grammatically correct with proper spelling, punctuation, and
capitalization.
Following Instructions – Please make sure that you understand what
is expected.
Details – Make sure that you include enough facts in your supporting
sentences for your topic sentence. General statements must be

supported with facts from the textbook.
Points
Analysis – Make sure that your essay is analytical and not a
description of events. You should support all general statements with
facts. Why are these things important to history?
Please remember to properly cite your paragraphs with page numbers
from the textbook. Since you must use Beyond Myths & Legends, you
may use a simple citation such as (Howell, 7th ed, pg 234).
Documentation
and Citations You must cite the information even when paraphrasing or
summarizing. All direct quotes must be in quotation marks with the
page number at the end of the quote. Otherwise, it is plagiarism.
