Tiempo Muerto
"Tiempo Muerto," a poignant documentary by Atom Araullo, sheds light on the arduous
lives of farmers in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines. The film epitomizes the struggles of
individuals such as Oro and Toper, young dreamers burdened by the weight of poverty. Their
determination to carve out a successful future resonates profoundly, revealing the persistent hope
that defines their journey. Similarly, the portrayal of the seasoned farmer, Tatay Sonny, offers a
glimpse into the intergenerational challenges that these resilient souls face daily.

Poverty emerges as the central theme, accentuating the hardships endured by these
diligent farmers who start working in the fields as early as 13 or 14 years old, juggling labor with
their educational aspirations. Their meager daily income of 250 pesos becomes a means of
sustenance, stretched meticulously to support their families and educational endeavors. However,
this paltry sum, in the face of soaring commodity prices, stands as a stark reminder of the
overarching financial burdens they confront.

Furthermore, the documentary emphasizes the overarching systemic issues plaguing the
farming community, notably the absence of substantial government support and the persistent
lack of legislative safeguards for the agrarian sector. The absence of land rights and the dearth
of protective measures pose substantial challenges, compounding the daily struggles of these
resilient souls.

Reflecting on this plight, it is evident that our farmers urgently require comprehensive
governmental intervention, including the implementation of agrarian reforms that guarantee land
rights and equitable distribution. Enhanced access to financial aid, technological advancements,
and educational opportunities tailored to their needs are imperative for fostering sustainable
growth within this marginalized community.

The story of these farmers serves as an earnest call to action for the authorities to devise
robust policies aimed at uplifting the agricultural sector. Their unwavering determination in the
face of adversity serves as a reminder to cherish life's simple pleasures and persevere against all
odds. As I delve into the narrative of Oro, Toper, and Tatay Sonny, I am reminded to cherish the
small blessings amidst our struggles and champion the cause of those who toil tirelessly to feed
the nation.
