THEORY
SELF-CARE THEORY
Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Nursing Theory,
developed from 1959 to 2001, emphasizes
individual self-care and aims to help patients
become more independent, particularly in
rehabilitation centers, where patients are
encouraged to perform their best even after
illness.
S E L F - C A R E T H E O RY
Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory emphasizes the
importance of interaction with environment and others,
purposeful decision-making, and the need for self-care.
It acknowledges that mature individuals often struggle
with self-care, and emphasizes the collaborative nature
of individuals in organized relationships. The theory
explores how humans communicate, make choices, and
support each other in fulfilling their needs.
