Lesson Plan

Subject: Social Studies Grade: 5 Date: Oct 18, 2023


Unit: Canadian Geography
Lesson: Time: 35 minutes
General Outcome:
Geography: Understanding the world we live in, and the relationship of people and
places, is supported by knowing features of the natural and political world, such as
oceans, mountain ranges, and boundaries.
Specific Outcome:
Students examine landform regions, major bodies of water, climate zones, and
political boundaries in Canada
Lesson Objectives:
Students will learn how to utilize google maps to learn about Canada's geography.

Materials:

-Computers or Phone
-Internet
-List of Geographical Locations

Preparation:
-Get computer cart
-Have list of places ready

Adaptations:
- Partener up with someone who has better computer skills.

Lesson Procedure:
-Sit the students down at their desks, then verbally introduce the assignment. (3
minutes)
- The assignment is to plan a trip in whatever country the student desires, planning at
least five stops, and including transportation methods.
-Show the powerpoint created on how to use google earth. (4 minutes)
-Show a video giving an overview of how to use google maps. (3 minutes)

-Students grab a computer off of the cart, visit google earth, and start planning. (15
minutes)
-Have them write out the journey on a blank sheet of paper. (10 minutes)
-Make sure students include at least one interesting fact about each stop.
-After first assessment, they will complete a final draft that includes pictures.

Assessment:
-Formative assessment will be utilized on the rough drafts, giving feedback on what
should be altered in order to have a cohesive and visually appealing journey planner.
-Summative assessment will be utilized on the good copy, as they now clearly
understand what is expected of them. They will get a grade based on the amount of
detail they provide in their journey, as well as on their ability to gather information
about the stops themselves.
