Craft a Job Description

This sample job description is to provide you with a solid foundation to begin
creating and
writing your own job descriptions. A job description serves many purpose:

« Describe the position’s responsibilities

« First introduction of your company to a prospective candidate

+ Recruitment, development, and retention

+ Performance evaluation for current employees

We recommend you revisit and update this document each time you need to hire new
talent.
To make it easier to follow, we have included examples of job descriptions from
Boom! By Cindy
Joseph. These examples can be easily identified in featured boxes.

Job Title

The star of the show when it comes to job descriptions is the job title. This
should be located

at the top of the page and on its own line. Be sure to make the title specific to
the actual job.

In a 2020 Indeed survey, 36% of job seekers search by job title first. If you try
to stand out with
something creative or unique to your company, i.e.- Customer Success Specialist vs.
Customer
Support, you may have more difficulty finding quality talent because they are not
searching for
your exact postings.

Customer Support Advocate

In our Boom! example above, the job title is clearly stated. Not sure exactly what
to title a
particular job? Go to indeed.com and type in some key terms to see the job titles
that populate
for your desired skills (like doing keyword research for SEQ). se a job title from
this search for
your job description to guarantee an increase in candidates that you are looking
for

Job Summary

The job summary section should use the best copywriting techniques. Open with a
strong,
attention-grabbing summary that gives an overview of your company and the
expectations
for the job. This is your chance to make a first impression on a potential
candidate. Hook your
candidate with details about what makes your company unique. Describe your brand,
what
your company’s values are, and feature your company’s culture; show why your
employees love
working for you. People get excited about things other people are excited about,
your company
should be presented as one of those things.

The summary is a good opportunity to also let your candidate know if the position
will be fully
remote, hybrid, or if they are required to come into an office daily. Make sure to
give clear
expectations for what they will be required to do in their job. This is a vital
step, do not skip

it. Some companies make the mistake of hiring for a job title, but have
expectations of extra
responsibilities not typically associated with this job title -i.e-a Customer
Support Advocate
may be additionally required to do Technical Writing on how to work a product.
Don't let the
candidate create assumptions, be clear and concise with everything you want them to
do.

Hey! Are you interested in working remotely with a fun and talented team? Then
maybe you can come work with us!

Who are we? We're Boom! By Cindy Joseph, the first Pro-age cosmetic line that
celebrates women over 50. We're looking for someone who, above all, can provide
a stellar customer service experience. This involves being kind, patient, and
knowledgeable. Sound like you? Good! Keep reading...

Your day-to-day tasks would involve helping our customers and readers with their
orders and questions about our products. You may also provide feedback to our
development team, cross-sell products and give an overall positive impression of
BOOM! by Cindy Joseph (it's not hard — we're great!)

In the Boom! example above (clearly by a copywriter), we use a strong opening line
to get
people's attention. Right away we let them know it’s going to be a remote position
so the
candidate isn’t limited from the position by geography. In our second paragraph, we
talk
about our company and what makes Boom! different. We discuss our mission statement
and
we are hoping to attract someone that has the attributes we value most -"kind,
patient, and
knowledgeable”-- to our team. Finally, we go over what a Customer Support Advocate
at Boom!
is required to do on the job and give the candidate an overview of our day-to-day.

Requirements

The next section of our job description is to list out the core responsibilities of
the position. You
want to make sure that the Requirements list is detailed but concise. Emphasize the
duties that
may be unique to your organization. For example, if you are hiring for a “Marketing
Manager”
role and the position requires social media expertise to promote promos and content
marketing, you need to include these details This ensures your candidates are aware
of and
understand the requirements of the job and can also determine if they want to take
on those
tasks (or even if they are qualified to do so).

REQUIREMENTS:
+ Motivated with a positive, can-do attitude
« Eager to learn and take ownership of duties
+ Excellent communicator (both written and verbal) who works well with others
« Efficient and well organized
« Able to work remotely (from home), with team communications via Slack and
Zoom
« A fast typer and good with technology
« Able to work evenings and weekends
« An understanding of ecommerce is a big plus!

This example for a Customer Support Advocate from our Boom! job description lists
out the
necessary skills required to be successful in this job. At Boom! the customer care
team works
on a seven days a week schedule. Some customer care teams only work five days a
week
(Monday - Friday). Because we are going to have a schedule that is atypical of a
standard
work week (“Able to work evenings and weekends”), we want that to be known upfront.
This
will make sure that we get candidates that are okay with that schedule. The final
bullet point
—"An understanding of ecommerce is a big plus!” — highlights the finding candidates
who
have worked on support teams in ecommerce since Boom! is an ecommerce company. This
increases the chance of getting candidates who do not need training in customer
support for
ecommerce companies.

Benefits

This is what you have to offer the potential candidate. Most of these are fairly
standard (PTO,
Health Insurance, Home Office Allowance, etc.), but one that most candidate seekers
are not
posting is a salary range, even though it is highly searched for by job seekers.
Hiring someone
is not cheap.. In fact, according to the Society of Human Resource Management, it
costs an
employer on average $4,129. The cost to hire employees increases proportionately
based on
the duration of the search, job role, and salary range. At the end of the day you
DO NOT want
to waste your time and resources- or that of a potential candidate- by getting
three or four
rounds into the interview process to then find out you are offering them $20k less
than what
they are making now. This is why posting a salary range is so important. Candidates
will know
immediately if the position they are applying for is in their desired range, and
you don't run
the risk of falling for a candidate that you aren't prepared to afford. Finally, be
sure to list
unique benefits to your company asperks. If you allow pets at the office, let
people know. If you
reimburse for a gym membership tell candidates up front. This is how you attract
top talent.

REQUIREMENTS:
« Competitive pay [INSERT SALARY RANGE]
« Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA Benefits (Optional)
e Paid Time Off - Including Sick Pay
« Work remotely (from home).
« Be apart of a friendly, enthusiastic team that believes having fun is part of
doing good work

In our final Boom! example, we have a list of the benefits that come with the
support job. The
first one is the salary range (which we leave bracketed to remind us to put it for
all positions
we hire). We distinguish between PTO and Sick Pay —- for some companies they are
one in
the same, however, we have two separate categories. Finally, we remind people that
another
benefit is that we are a remote company, no need to trek into an office.

Just remember, you are making an investment in your company and it’s not a cheap
investment. You want to find a candidate (and, eventually an employee) that will
see working
for you to be a mutually beneficial relationship. In order to find this someone,
you need to make
sure you have your job description dialed in!
