LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 11 QUARTER: 1 WEEK: 3 DAY: 4

COMPETENC Solves problems involving rational functions, equations, and
Y& : inequalities. (M11GM-Ic-3)
OBJECTIVES
CONTENT : Solving Problems Involving Rational Functions, Equations and Inequalities
LEARNING SLM Module 3
RESOURCES : GM LM pages 35-59
GM TG pages 25-66
PROCEDURE A. Preparation
: Check the assignment.
B. Motivation

Consider this situation.

Past records from a factory suggest that new employees can assemble 𝑁
75𝑡
components per day after 𝑡 days of being on the job, where 𝑁(𝑡) = 𝑡+5, 𝑡 ≥ 0.
Identify the horizontal asymptote of 𝑁 and discuss its meaning in practical terms.
1. What kind of function describes the relationship between the number of
components assembled by an employee and the number of days he is on
the job?
2. What is the horizontal asymptote of this function?
3. What would the horizontal asymptote mean?
C. Presentation
A number of real-life situations can be solved by applying the concepts you
learned about rational functions, rational equations, and rational inequalities.

Present the learning objectives.

D. Discussion/Abstraction
Due to inclement weather, the pilot of a plane slows down the plane’s regular
flying rate by 25%. This result to an additional 1.5 hours in covering the 3,000-km
distance to its regular time required for the trip. Find the regular rate of the plane.

SOLUTION: Let r=regular rate in kilometers per hour.

Trip Condition Distance Rate Time

3,000
Regular Trip 3,000 𝑟
𝑟
Trip in inclement 75% 𝑜𝑓 𝑟 3,000
3,000
weather = 0.75𝑟 0.75𝑟
The time to cover the distance during inclement weather is 1.5 hours more than
the time to cover same distance during a regular trip. Hence,
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑤𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 = 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑝 + 1.5
3,000 3,000
0.75𝑟
= 𝑟
+ 1.5
3,000 3,000+1.5𝑟
0.75𝑟
= 𝑟
3,000𝑟 = 0.75𝑟(3,000 +
1.5𝑟)
3,000𝑟 = 2,250𝑟 + 1.125𝑟 2
750𝑟 = 1.125𝑟 2
0 = 1.125𝑟 2 − 750𝑟
2
1.125𝑟 − 750𝑟 = 0
𝑟(1.125𝑟 − 750) = 0
Equating each factor to zero we get the 2 equations:
𝑟 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 1.125𝑟 − 750 = 0
750
𝑟 = 1.125
𝑟 ≈ 666.67 𝑘𝑝ℎ
The value 𝑟 = 0 is not a solution since the rate cannot be 0.
∴The rate of the regular trip is approximately 666.67 kph.
E. Exercises
The amount (in percent) of a drug in a person’s bloodstream h hours
5ℎ
after injection can be approximated using the function 𝑓(ℎ) = 4ℎ2+5 . Find
the approximate amount of a drug in a person’s bloodstream after it is
injected 3 and a half hours?
F. Generalization
How do you solve problems involving rational functions, equations, and
inequalities?
G. Application
Two ships travelling from Dumaguete to Cagayan de Oro differ in
average speed by 10 kph. The slower ship takes 3 hours longer to travel a
240-kilometer route than for the faster ship to travel a 200-kilometer route.
Find the speed of the slower ship. Hint: Construct an equation with time as
the variable.
H. Evaluation
A box with a square base is to have a volume of 64 cubic centimeters.
Let x be the length of the side of the square base and h be the height of the
box. What are the possible measurements of a side of the square base if the
height should be longer than a side of the square base?
I. Agreement/Assignment
How do you determine if a graph represents a function or not?
