Reach and Read

This is an activity where the child learns to spell words containing the initial consonant blend pl-
through a fun-filled activity with parents/elders integrating values of helpfulness and love for
parents (EsP), and strengthening gross motor skills (PE).
To prepare the parents for this activity, the teacher shall prepare a set of words, a sample of
the words written in sheets of paper, modelled to the parents how the activity should be done
(this can be done in their group chat, or during the limited face to face in school), including how
the words should be read and spelled.
Dear Parents, here’s how it is done:
1. Prepare sheets of paper cut from old calendars, paper bags, used boxes, etc. Using a
pen/marker, write these words into each sheet of paper:
plane pliers _____ ___________ _______

2. Hang these sheets of paper in the clothesline using __________.

3. Call the child outside and tell him/her to that you will practice getting clothes from the
clothesline. But instead of clothes, the child will play “Reach and Read”. The child will
reach for a word beginning with /pl/ which she is going to read and spell. (Please adjust
the height of the clothesline for the child to possibly reach the words being hanged by
jumping).

4. Demonstrate to the child the mechanics of the activity:

a. Jump and get a word.

b. Read the word three (3) times.
c. Spell the word while reading it from the paper.
d. Spell the word from memory.
e. Say the word, spell it, and say it again.

5. Let the child practice with one word. If s/he understands how the game is to be done.
Start the game.

6. If the child fails to correctly read and spell the word, the child should say “Please help
me read and spell the word, Mom/Ma/Nay”. Teach him/her how to read and spell the
word correctly then let him/her say “Thank you, Mom/Ma/Nay. The child then proceeds
to the steps in No. 4.
7. If the child gets the correct answer, give the child a kiss on her check and say any of
these with the child’s name: “Amazing, ___!”, “Marvelous, ____!”, “Great job!, ___”,
“Fantastic, ______!”, “Way to go, ____!”

8. This will be repeated until the child finishes all the words prepared and understands
how to read and spell the give words.

Learning Competency: Spell one to two syllable words containing initial consonant blends “pl”.
