Question 1

A slab is supported on 50mm wide timber joists at 0.6m centres spanning 2.0 m simply supported
at two ends. Find the depth of the timber joist required. [30 marks]

Given:
Permission stress of timber = 5.3N/mm2 x 1.25 = 6.625N/mm2
Section modulus of timber Z = bd2/6
Bending Equation: Bending stress = M/Z, where M is the bending moment.

Question 3

A new wood deck is constructed as shown below. Both the beams and the columns have been
designed based on the ultimate loads and it is confirmed that the designed capacity is larger than the
requirement. However, it is found that there is an excessive vibration when someone walks on the
deck.

(i) Comment why such vibration exists in this deck [20 marks].

(ii) Provide two possible solutions that can reduce or remove the deck vibration. [20 marks]
