Important information

• The course is designed in a "flipped classroom" format with case studies. This
means that every week when a lecture is scheduled, we will upload a video
containing the lecture content for you via this link: https://meeting.uol.de/b/joe-
qsn-oe5-wi8.
• Whenever a case study is scheduled, we will meet in person during the regular
lecture time (2.15 PM) in room A05 0-056 to do the case study together. We will
meet each Wednesday.
• Any questions you may have regarding the lecture content, we can settle in a
Q&A in the timeslot on Wednesdays between 2.15 pm and 3.45 pm in the room
A05 0-056 whenever a lecture is scheduled. You do not have to send your
questions to us via mail beforehand, but can just join us for the open Q&A and
we will clarify any questions regarding the course content then.
• We will upload the first video after today’s sessions so that you can ask
questions about the first video in the Q&A next week. After that, videos will be
uploaded in a similar manner.

Motivation: Climate change as major societal challenge

Historical trend: Future scenarios:

§ Meeting 1.5-degree goal requires major reduction in CO2 emissions

§ Stark contrast to trend of last decades, where emissions have almost steadily increased

Sources: Global Carbon Project 2021

Renewable Energy Management | Seminar 1: Formalities Prof. Dr. Joern Hoppmann | 18/10/2023 | 7
Motivation: Energy as biggest contributor to global CO2 emissions

§ Among different sectors,

energy production biggest
contributor to CO2 emissions
§ Other sectors also rely
heavily on energy
§ Overall: Energy essential for
meeting basic needs
(heating, lighting, cooling,
etc.), but related emissions
contribute to climate change
§ Energy as important input
factor for almost all
economic activity
§ Energy industry also
responsible for local
emissions (such as soot)

Why should I care?

Job:
§ Management and economics skills extremely important
when making decisions in context of renewable energy
(as complement to technical skills)
§ Understanding policy and societal dynamics caused by
changes in energy industry helps you choose employer
§ Large (and growing) renewable energy industry that
might be interested in hiring you (even oil majors and
electric utilities increasingly focused on renewables)

Private life:
• Literacy with regard to renewable energies important to
understand ways of tackling climate change
• Understanding societal issues surrounding renewable
energy technologies important to being able to engage in
debates about pros and cons
• But also: Understanding renewable energies important to
question own behavior and reduce ecological footprint

Online Learning Platform

§ CEREGO is a learning platform,

similar to an interactive flashcard
trainer
§ The principle is based on research
in learning psychology
§ On the day after each lecture (not
exercises!) we will put up a series of
multiple-choice questions to help
you practice your knowledge
§ Regular training increases your
chances of internalizing technical
terms and knowledge
§ Cerego's intelligent algorithm
selects the learning distances so
