Leveled Reader Guide for Home Learning

Animal Band
Reading is fun! Invite the child to have fun reading this book to you. Below are strategies you
can use Before During and After reading. Depending on the child’s ability you can:
• Read aloud to the child. Make your voice as expressive as possible.

• Read aloud with the child, either together at the same time or taking turns.

• Have the child read aloud to you. If the child struggles, help him/her read the words.

Before Look at the cover and at the pictures inside the book together. Ask:
Reading What do you think this story will be about? What animals do you see?
What are they doing? What are they holding?

During As you read, or as the child reads to you, pause from time to time
Reading to check his/her understanding. For example, ask:
• “What animals are there in the story?”

• “What instruments have you seen so far?”


If you come to a word that you think the child may not know,
ask: • “Have you heard of the word ‘flute’ before?"

• What does it mean?” Talk about the word’s meaning if the child
does not know it.
At key points in the story, pause, model making predictions and/or
ask the child:
• “What animal do you think will appear next?”

• “What instrument do you think it is going to play?”

• “Where do you think is the band going to play?”

After At the end, check the child’s understanding by asking:


Reading • Earlier, you guessed this story was going to be about…Was
your guess correct?
• “What animals are there in the story?

• “What is each animal doing?”


To help the child remember the events in the story, let him/her complete
a two-column table with the animals in the first column and the
instrument each played in the second column. For the first row, write
the animal in the first column and leave the instrument column blank.
For the second row, write the instrument and leave the first column
blank. Do this alternately.
Try making connections from the story and/or ask the child: •
“Have you ever played a musical instrument?” Or watched a
band? •Draw yourself playing one of the instruments you have
seen in the story. What song would you like to play using this
instrument?
