to be who you are.

It was really interesting to look at books from a different perspective. I don’t think I will look at a book the same again. Two

things I noticed repeatedly were that illustrations were not depicting the characters differently, and the books used gendered

terminology. First, almost every book would use different skin tones and hairstyles, but would not change anything else about the

people. The books did not change eye shape, nose shape, or even body shape. Everyone seemed to look the same minus their skin tone

and hair, and that just wasn’t realistic. I wished that I had seen different shapes and sizes of characters, as well as characters with

different abilities. This would have made the books much more inclusive.

The second thing I noticed when reviewing these books is that the authors used gender-identifying terms like he/she, mom/dad,

and brother/sister. The authors could have been much more inclusive by using terms like they, parent, and sibling. I was surprised by

this, but I know that some of the books were written many years ago. There was one book that seemed to shy away from gender-

identifying terms, and that was refreshing. I think these books represented different cultures well by using many different skin tones,

hairstyles, and clothing. I was impressed by this because I had never noticed this before.
