Description Service Call - Adrian ATS 3 Equipment failed to transfer back to normal. PO: UH 149635
1. It was determined that there is a shift of 120°between the respective phases between the
sources (maintaining the same direction of rotation). In other words, with reference to the
normal side with the sequence (BCA), the emergency side has a sequence (ABC).
2. There is a 30-degree electrical phase difference between the sources following the correct
sequence, which may be attributed to the transformer's connection group supplying the
sources connected to the ATS.
Item #2 was also confirmed in the ATS located immediately next to the ATS where the issue was
reported. This is the Life Safety ATS, where they share the same sequence and direction of
rotation but also exhibit a 30-degree electrical phase difference between the respective phases of
each source.
Following this, checks were conducted on the other ATS units at UHT to confirm whether the same
phase shift between the normal and emergency branches was occurring, which was indeed
confirmed.

Information
Findings An inspection and measurement were carried out on the Equipment Branch ATS located in the
electrical room on the 2nd floor of UHT. It was found that there is the same degree of electrical
phase displacement between the respective phases of the utility and emergency power feeds. To
confirm this, a similar situation was discovered in the other ATS units in the same electrical
room (Life Safety and Critical
Branches).
The 90 electrical degrees displayed by ATS #3, which prevented its operation, resulted from
a sequence displacement (BCA), creating a phase shift of 120° between the respective
phases (maintaining the same direction of rotation), in addition to -30° (The polarity of the
angles varies depending on the reference sequence taken) caused by the phase shift between
the feeds (utility and
emergency). Through the phase rotation meter, it was determined that both the Normal
source and the Emergency source are in a negative sequence (See Picture #1 to #4). This
implies that changing the source will NOT affect the direction of rotation of the loads
connected to this Branch.
Additionally, it was verified with the Data Logger equipment that there were no phasorial problems in
both the Normal and Emergency source (See Picture #5 and #6). Finally, the sequence in
the load (9th floor of the south tower) in the parking garage elevator machine room was checked,
where it showed a positive sequence (See Picture #7). This was achieved by making
thecorresponding rotation at the ATS equipment output.
Recommendations Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that this angular phase shift (approximately 26
electrical degrees) is present throughout the installation. However, for practical purposes, it does
not pose a problem for people or equipment. This is because the ATS units perform open
transitions, and therefore, perfect phase synchronization is not required.
o In the ATS configuration, the 'In Phase' option must be disabled to prevent issues during
load transfer. This is feasible because they are configured for open transition, meaning
that at no point will both sources be electrically coupled.

Notes The phase angle was measured in all ATS's of the building and the settings were checked to verify if the phase angle meter
function was enabled. It was found that the function was enabled with a setpoint of 10 degree.
