Essay 2 /Assignment

1. The speaker’s thesis is the recognition of police violence towards African American but also

that the recognition of the level of police violence towards African American women experience

is very low compared to those of African American men. Especially those who are found at a

cross section of two platforms. For example, being African American and a woman.

My initial reaction is that I agree with her about the high level of violence and racism towards

African American by the police. I also agree with the speaker at this stage, as police violence and

racism against African Americans are seen in everyday on TV, radio station, social media,

newspapers etc.

2. The concession statement made by the speaker was that African American women everywhere

are just as vulnerable to police violence as African American men, but why isn't there a platform

to help solve the problem or at least raise awareness of it? The difference is that we hear more

stories about African American men than African American women. The argument is limited by

the question of how to handle the situation if we are unaware of the issue or its name.

3. Because she is an African American woman, the speaker has a bias. Ms. Crenshaw has shown

bias against women of color by speaking to a lot of people all over the world.
Afram 2

She addresses these biases when she discusses Emma DeGraffenreid, an African American

woman who sought better employment but was discriminated against because she was both a

woman and an African American. A judge decided that this was not a valid case.

4. a. The lawsuit by Emma DeGraffenreid.

b. The list of African Americans whose lives have been cut short as a result of police brutality in

recent years.

c. In 2014 the African American Policy Forum began to demand that we “say her name”.

5.

a. Police violence against black women is very real.

b. When facts do not fit with the available frames, people have a hard time taking in new facts

into their way of thinking about the problem.

c. Reporters not leading their stories with the attacked individuals, Policymakers not thinking

about them.

d. Saying her name is not enough.

6. At the beginning of the TED Talk, Ms. Crenshaw starts off with an exercise. She has everyone

stand and when they do not recognize a name and they cannot tell her anything about the person,

they must sit. The names being listed were those who were victims of police violence. This set

the topic and pace of the conversation. As well as speaking on the Emma DeGraffenreid case,

she used factual evidence to make her claim regarding intersectionality.

7. The opposition statement that the speaker addresses is the matter of framing and why it

matters. She spoke about how if there is an issue that affects African American and an issue that

affects women, wouldn’t that include African Americans who are women and women who are

African Americans. By not having frames that allow us to see how social issues impact all the

members of a targeted group majority will fall through the cracks of the movements.

8. The speaker’s tone is respectful, not judgmental. She was also very emotional especially when

speaking about the topic at hand and very sincere regarding the issues towards African American

women.

9. a. Black women of all ages and walks of life have been killed in all sorts of locations and

situations.

b. Women of color are ignored in discussions of racial and gender discrimination because the

public lacks a "frame" or point of view that includes them. This has resulted in unseen prejudice

against them.

c. African American women are facing all kinds of dilemmas and challenges as a consequence of

intersectionality.

d. Police violence against black women is real.
