ETHNIC AND MINANG ETHNIC
IN PADANG

ABSTRACT
Background:The success of an orthodontic treatment depends on the diagnosis
and the right treatment plan, which determines the shape of the dental arch is
ideal for patients greatly affect the aesthetics and the stabilization of the teeth.
The shape of the dental arch consists of three forms tapered, ovoid and square.
Factors affecting the dental arch forms including genetics, race, gender, and the
environment. Padang is the capital of West Sumatra province which has many
tribes and ethnic diversity, such as the Minang tribe and ethnic Chinese.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to see the difference in the maxillary dental arch
form between ethnic Chinese and ethnic Minang.
Method:This research is an observational analytic with cross sectional approach.
Total sample of 62 people consisting of 31 ethnic Chinese and 31 ethnic Minang.
Maxillary dental arch is printed using print materials alginate and gips stone.
Determination of dental arch is done by drawing shapes on transparent plastic
dental arch and match the picture with OrthoForm template. Statistical test using
Chi-square test.
Results:The results of Chi-square test was p <0.1. This shows that there are
differences in the maxillary dental arch form between ethnic Chinese and ethnic
Minang.
Conclusion: There are different forms of the maxillary dental arch with the
Chinese ethnic Minang tribe.
