Running & Handling Procedures for Grant Prideco Express™ (VX™) and
Grant Prideco Express‐M™ (VX‐M™) Connections
Background
Grant Prideco Express is a rotary shouldered connection with double shoulders ideal for extreme torque
drilling applications. The thread taper in this connection is optimized to allow larger torque shoulders while still
allowing easy stabbing. In addition to the change in thread taper, the thread profile is also modified to improve
the fatigue resistance of the connection. Note that Grant Prideco Express (VX) is not interchangeable with any
other drill pipe connections.
Grant Prideco Express‐M, comes with a rotary shouldered connection with double shoulders along with a
pressure rated metal‐to‐metal radial seal ideal for high pressure/high torque completion and work‐over
operations. Note that Grant Prideco Express‐M (VX‐M) is not interchangeable with any other drill pipe
connections including VX.
This document provides a procedure for effectively and efficiently running and handling Grant Prideco VX / VX‐
M connections.
Detail
1.0 Scope: This procedure describes the running & handling requirements for Grant Prideco Express
(VX)/Grant Prideco Express‐M (VX‐M) connections.
3.0 Equipment: The equipment listed below is considered industry best practice to perform the described
activities:
3.1. Calibrated Load Cell: Use rig floor tongs and a calibrated load cell to ensure the correct make‐up
torque (MUT) value is applied to Grant Prideco Express™ (VX™)/Grant Prideco Express‐M™ (VX‐M™)
connection from the iron roughneck and/or other automated make‐up equipment.
3.2. Saver Sub: Grant Prideco Express (VX)/Grant Prideco Express‐M (VX‐M) are not interchangeable with
any other drill pipe connections. Only use Grant Prideco Express (VX) with Grant Prideco Express
accessories. Only use Grant Prideco Express‐M (VX‐M) with Grant Prideco Express‐M accessories.
3.3. Rotary Shoulder Connection Running Compound (dope) and application brush.
Note 1: Confirm the type of thread compound on connections, i.e. – rotary shoulder connection
running compound – or – connection storage compound. The user is responsible for ensuring
that the existing compound is compatible with the intended running compound at the rig site;
otherwise, clean the connections as necessary to remove any storage compound and replace
it with a rotary shouldered connection running compound. If dried or hardened compound
is present on the connection (regardless of type), clean connections to remove dried or
hardened compound and replace it with fresh compound. Do not use diesel fuel for
connection cleaning as it can leave a film that will prevent compound adhesion to the
connection and dilute the running compound friction factor.
Note 2: Ensure the use of contaminant‐free thread compound and proper doping procedures. Grant
Prideco Express (VX)/Grant Prideco Express‐M (VX‐M) connections are designed to be run
with any rotary shouldered connection running compound that meets API requirements and
has a Friction Factor of least 1.0.
However, Grant Prideco prefers the use of a good quality copper‐based thread compound for rotary
shouldered connections due to its repeatable frictional characteristics and increased friction factor.
An even coat of thread compound shall cover the entire connection surface including the internal
shoulders, external shoulders, and all threads of both Pin and Box connections.
3.4. Thread Protectors: Heavy Duty plastic is the preferred material for thread protectors.
3.5. Stabbing Guide
Unlike the VX connection, the VX‐M connection does require the use of a stabbing guide. It is
necessary to ensure protection of the radial metal‐to‐metal seal of the pin connection.
Note 1: Stabbing guides are available in many types (polymer, plastic, stainless steel, etc.) and sizes
as shown in the picture above. The use of a de‐stabbing guide is NOT required nor
recommended by Grant Prideco™ when de‐stabbing the Grant Prideco Express™/Grant
Prideco Express‐M™ series connection.
Note 2: With automatic pipe handling system, the pipe handling system shall be properly calibrated,
aligned, and pre‐adjusted to ensure proper alignment and smooth stabbing, as the use of a
stabbing guide with such systems is generally precluded.
3.6. Drill Pipe Wiper (preferred): The use of a Drill Pipe Wiper is preferred as it helps remove fluids and
debris from the pipe and maintain a clean work area.
4.0 Inspection Procedures on Arrival at Rig Site/ Prior to Running the Pipe
4.1. Ensure the Grant Prideco Quality Document Package (QDP) matches the description of the drill pipe
delivered to the rig. In case of doubt or conflict, please contact the drill pipe provider or Grant
Prideco.
4.2. Visually inspect the pipe and tool joints for damage.
4.2.2. If the pipe is not going to be used immediately, check the condition of storage compound to
prevent corrosion of the connections.
4.3. The connections of all handling plugs (lift subs, cast steel protectors, etc.) shall be visually inspected
prior to each use. Damaged handling plugs shall not be used on Grant Prideco Express/Grant
Prideco Express‐M connections. Secure thread protectors to handling plugs prior to placing them
into the V‐door or other conveyance to the rig floor and maintain thread protectors on the
handling tools until they are ready for make up to respective the Grant Prideco Express/Grant
Prideco Express‐M connection.
4.4. The overall length of saver subs used for API rotary‐shouldered connections is not suitable for use
with Grant Prideco Express series connections. Saver sub length requirements are tied to the top
drive manufacturer and type. Consult the top drive manufacturer for proper saver sub length
requirements.
Note 1: Saver subs observe elevated loading and multiple make & breaks. Grant Prideco™ has
specific requirements for material properties of these sub types when Grant Prideco
proprietary connections are installed. Ensure the saver sub material is provided by either
Grant Prideco or a licensed Grant Prideco machine shop.
4.5. Top drive grippers used to make up the Grant Prideco Express/Grant Prideco Express‐M box to the
saver sub pin connection must be positioned at least 2” from the box primary shoulder. In no
instance should the top drive pin gripper be positioned simultaneously on both the saver sub pin
and Grant Prideco Express/Grant Prideco Express‐M box connection.
4.6. It is recommended to check the Performance Data Sheet for the product that you have at the rig
site ahead of time rather than waiting until you are about to use it.
5.0 Running Procedure: This procedure assumes normal running conditions and a pin down, box up string
configuration.
5.1. As with any connection, proper connection alignment is important prior to spin‐up. Ensure the
Note 1: If the connection is made up misaligned, thread damage may occur. Should this happen, any
raised metal should be removed with a soft grinding wheel or a file. For VX™ and VX‐M™
refer to the latest revision of Field Inspection Procedure for Used Grant Prideco Express™
Connections and Field Inspection Procedure for Used Grant Prideco Express‐M™ Connections
respectively.
5.2.1. Adjust the top drive bell stabbing guide, fixed or adjustable in order to provide ½ inch maximum
clearance over the drill pipe box tool joint outside diameter (OD). This will guide the pin connection into
the box without damaging the box shoulder. Contact the top drive manufacturer to get the proper size
of guide if necessary.
5.2.2. Verify the weight of the top drive and hoisting equipment applied at the Top Drive Saver Sub
(TDSS) lower connection during make‐up operations is at a minimum, either through properly calibrated
and aligned automated pipe handling equipment or as controlled by the driller hoisting equipment.
Note 1: Top drive weight compensators / counter‐balance systems provide a means to minimize the
weight of the top drive shaft (quill) and TDSS applied to the connection during make up. If
the top drive weight compensators / counter‐balance is not effective, excessive weight
applied to the Grant Prideco Express/Grant Prideco Express‐M may cause connection
damage. Contact the top drive manufacturer for proper weight compensators / counter‐
balance adjustment and calibration procedures.
5.3. Before making up the connections, an even coat of thread compound shall cover the entire
connection surfaces of both Pin and Box connections including the internal shoulders, external
shoulders, and all threads of both Pin and Box connections.
Note 1: Recently cleaned connections may require the threads to be dry before thread compound is
applied. Some thread compounds may not properly adhere to the threads and shoulders of
wet connections.
Note 2: For VX‐M 77 break‐in requirements, refer to Product Bulletin PR‐63.
Note 3: Some drilling/completion fluids and additives may alter frictional and other properties of the
thread compound. Consult the thread compound manufacturer to verify compatibility of the
thread compound with drilling/completion fluids and additives. If breakdown of the thread
compound properties due to fluid contamination is suspected, rinse the fluid off the

5.4. Lower the top drive bottom pin connection of the TDSS into the top box connection of the drill pipe
stump at the rig floor to confirm the pin nose is equidistantly centered within the box counterbore.
If misalignment is visible, make necessary adjustment.
5.4.1. This is a good time to make and break any additional subs as well.
5.5. Consistent with Industry Best Practice for all connections, Grant Prideco™ recommends the box tong
