3.2 Installation of the Transmission

A special tool is required for this procedure.

Special Tool for Transmission Installation

Input Shaft Pliers (P/N: DDE W715 589 01 37 00)

Install as follows:

Show/Hide Checkboxes

1. Ensure that the Concentric Pneumatic Clutch Actuator (CPCA) is fully collapsed (B)
before mating the transmission to the engine. If expanded (A), collapse the CPCA by
hand.
NOTICE:
Do not apply lubricant to the input shaft splines. Clutch dust will contaminate the
lubricant and cause slow clutch response time.

2. Raise the transmission up. Using input shaft pliers, DDE W715 589 01 37 00, align
the splines with the clutch, then fit the transmission to the flywheel housing.
3. Install the flywheel-housing-to-clutch-housing fasteners, and using a star pattern,
tighten them finger-tight. Then, using the same star pattern, tighten the capscrews to 61 to
72 N·m (45 to 53 lb·ft), and the threaded stud 47 to 61 N·m (35 to 45 lb·ft).
4. Remove the jack from under the vehicle.
5. Connect the chassis harness connector (1) to the Transmission Control Module
(TCM) (2).
NOTICE:
To prevent damage to the shift controller, use a back-up wrench to support the air
pressure adapter fitting.

6. Attach the air supply connection to the shift controller. Tighten the connection to 58
to 64 N·m (43 to 47 lb·ft).
7. If applicable, attach the battery cable and the oil cooler line fasteners to the bottom of
the transmission.
8. Attach any brackets to the top of the transmission.
9. Connect the driveline to the transmission output yoke. See Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.
10. Clean the gasket material from all the exhaust connection surfaces, being sure not to
drop any material in the ATD or piping.
11. Install a new exhaust tube gasket, and then loosely install the ATD inlet pipe and
bellows.
12. Confirm that the ATD inlet pipe and bellows are seated properly, then tighten the
clamps to 13 to 14 N·m (115 to 125 lb·in.) and the support bracket fasteners to 19 to 22
N·m (14 to 16 lb·ft).
13. Install the right-hand, cab-mounted splash shield. See OEM procedures.
14. Install the right-hand, side-fairing panels. See OEM procedures.
15. If applicable, install the ATD outlet piping.

NOTICE:
Detroit transmissions use synthetic lubricant that meets the requirements of the MB
235.11 specification, such as Detroit Synth 75W-90. Using lubricant that does not
comply with this specification will result in damage to the transmission.

16. Add transmission fluid; for instructions, see OEM procedures.

17. Connect all the batteries.

EYE INJURY

To avoid injury from flying debris when using compressed air, wear adequate eye
protection (face shield or safety goggles) and do not exceed 276 kPa (40 psi) air pressure.

18. Use shop air to charge the air system.

19. Using the DiagnosticLink® software interface, perform the "transmission learn"
steps.
