Blood Collection Tubes

Blood collection tubes come in different colors that indicate the additive in the tube and its purpose. Yellow tubes contain anticoagulants to prevent clotting and stabilize bacteria for blood and fluid cultures. Red tubes contain no additive or silica to promote clotting for serum tests. Lavender tubes contain the anticoagulant EDTA for hematology tests. Green tubes contain heparin as an anticoagulant for chemistry tests. Grey tubes contain oxalate and fluoride as anticoagulants and to prevent glucose breakdown for chemistry tests focusing on glucose. Light blue and black tubes contain citrate as an anticoagulant for coagulation tests and chemistry tests focusing on glucose.
