His results were out. He had passed with excellent marks and topped his class. He was excited to go to the next standard and a new class. He had already bought a new school uniform and books. His friend Blacky bear was also in the same class. “I am excited to be in our class. It shall be loads of fun,” said Jumpy, excitedly. “You are tight, Jumpy. But we will have 4 to even study more than before,” sighed Blacky. Jumpy laughed and said, “Studying is a piece of cake for me. I'll do that easily. Didn't you see that I topped the class last time?” boasted Jumpy. “But just because you topped the last time, it does not mean, you'll top the class this time, too. You will have to study harder,” Blacky said. “Don't you give me any advice. I know CHAMPAK, what I have to do,” Jumpy rudely snapped. “All right. From now onwards, T'll not tell you anything,” Blacky said and left. But Jumpy’s focus on studies became lesser. He spent more time playing. He felt that being a topper in his previous class, automatically made him the topper in this class, too. He did not need to study as much, “Jumpy, nowadays you're paying less attention to your studies. Playing is good but you should not play all the time. You will fall behind in your studies this way,” said his mom. “Don’t worry, Ma. I'll top my class this time, too,” Jumpy said confidently, not listening to her advice. “Nobody can do well without hard work. You will have to study for that,” his mother advised. Jumpy got irritated and said, “We'll talk about this when my exams come. Right now, I am going out to play.” Slowly, Jumpy started falling behind in his studies. Soon, it was time for the unit tests. Because he had not put in the work, Jumpy got less marks and was very disappointed. “Jumpy, this time you've been very careless. If this goes on, you will score low marks,” his teacher, Cheeku rabbit warned him. “Sir, I'll be more careful next time. Vl pay more attention to my studies,” Jumpy promised. But after a few days, Jumpy forgot his priorities. Once again, he started playing the whole day. He was not interested in anything but playing. Everybody tried to make him understand, but he was in his ovn world. ‘ “I will study during my half-yearly exams,” he said to himself. Slowly, the half-yearly exams drew nearer. Jumpy had not prepared anything, Now, it seemed difficult to even pass the subjects. He thought he would cheat. He made a few chits for his maths paper. But, he was caught and taken to the principal, Jumbo elephant. “Jumpy, what’s this? You've been the topper in our school. How could you do this? You want to cheat and pass! I can expel you from the school for this,” said Jumbo, sternly. Hearing this, Jumpy started crying. Tears started flowing from his eyes. “I have made a grave mistake, Sir. I will not do it again,” cried Jumpy. “Last year, you worked hard, so you topped the class. This time, you were careless and the result is in front of you. You cannot succeed without hard work. Overconfidence is harmful. If you had studied every day, you would not have needed to cheat today,” Jumbo explained. “From today onwards, I will work hard. Please forgive me,” Jumpy replied to Jumbo as he understood the importance of hard work. “This must never happen again,” Jumbo cautioned him and let him go. Jumpy gave his exams and came back home. On reaching home, he told everything to his mother and hugged her. “Doesn't matter, Jumpy. Mistakes happen. We must learn from them. Success is not permanent, It depends on our hard work.” Jumpy made a study timetable and started working hard on his studies. He now decided to do well in his new class, too @ Steve: Hey, mom! The moment Bani entered her class, someone whispered, “Achooro has arrived.” Bani heard the comment and looked down. She then hesitantly raised her eyes and felt as if every child in the class was looking and laughing only at her. She got nervous and took out her handkerchief from her skirt pocket, clutched it tightly, rolling itin her hand. 10 Walking slowly, she sat on her chair. As soon as she sat, Vinay, who was seated next to her, slid further away. Bani was feeling horrible. She looked at Vinay from the corner of her eyes, quietly opened her book and started reading it. ‘Then suddenly her nose started twitching and before she could even take out her handkerchief and place it on her nose, “Achoo!” she sneezed loudly, spreading the droplets all around. Vinay frowned and whispered, “Achooro.” He then changed his seat just before Miss Soumya, their science teacher, entered the class. “Vinay, aren't you supposed to sit next to Bani? Why have you changed seats without permission? Go back to your seat,” instructed Miss Soumya. “Sorry ma’am, but Bani has again caught a cold and is sneezing all the time. I don’t want to catch an infection from her,” ) this. Precautions are necessary, but you don’t need to avoid Bani or tease her,” explained Miss Soumya. Vinay nodded but didn’t change his seat and Miss Soumya started teaching. While talking to the class, Miss Soumya kept a constant watch on Bani. She saw that she was continuously sneezing and had a runny nose. She used her handkerchief to wipe her nose and touched her nose and mouth explained Vinay, staring hard at Bani. with her hands very often, maybe because she was too uncomfortable. Bani wiped her nose with her handkerchief and started turning the pages of her book. Miss Soumya glanced at Bani who was looking very sad. “Vinay, Bani does not have a regular cold, but she suffers from an allergy, which is caused due to many reasons. Bani gets this allergy because of the change in the weather. Her parents explained that during the rainy weather, dust, carbon and pollution particles cannot travel higher and they are stuck in the lower layer of the atmosphere, because of which we come into their contact more. Hypersensitive people like Bani get allergies from July (First) 2023 After the class, Miss Soumya went to Bani and whispered, “Meet me during the lunch break.” As instructed, Bani met Miss Soumya. Again, she kept touching her nose and mouth. “Bani, are you taking the medication prescribed by the doctor?” asked Miss Soumya, gently. Bani nodded her head. Soon after, she covered her nose with her hand, sneezed loudly and wiped her nose with her handkerchief that was kept in her pocket. “That’s good, but along with the medication you need to change some of your habits, too, Bani, You have to stop touching your face so often. This is because we touch many surfaces with our hands and when our hands touch our face and nose, the germs on our hands enter our nose and mouth, which adds to your allergy. Wash your hands with soap and water frequently throughout the day. You can also wear a mask to protect yourself and others,” said Miss Soumya. “Mask? But, Ma’am, masks had to be worn only during coronavirus. We don’t have to wear masks anymore. If I do, everybody will make fun of me,” hesitated Bani. Miss Soumya smiled and added, “During the coronavirus pandemic, we used masks to protect us from viruses, 12 . . But masks also protect us from small dust particles. Try wearing it and see if it helps you. And speaking of others making fun of us, we will talk about it in class. They will eventually stop teasing you,” said Miss Soumya, lovingly. Bani understood. ‘The next day, she came to school wearing a mask. Everybody was smiling at her. She wore the mask properly over her nose and sat at her seat confidently. Within a few days, her classmates realised that just by making a few changes in her habits, Bani’s allergies had decreased to an extent. No one teased her anymore. Bani was happy she knew how to deal with her allergy in a better way @ StuPP @ A small bowl (glass or steel) Cling wrap A mixing bowl © A small, smooth stone © String or scotch tape © 4 cups of drinking water © 2 tablespoons of salt Think about it How does salt water become drinkable? Water can exist in three states: solid, liquid and gas. When the bowl is placed under the sun, the water particles at the top of the water surface gain energy from the sun and turn into gas or water vapour. This process is called evaporation. ‘As the water vapour is blocked by the plastic wrap, the water particles begin to lose energy and transform back into water and collect beneath the wrap as water droplets, Since the wrap slopes towards the centre, so do the water drops which then collect in the small bowl. This water is pure because only water can evaporate and not salt, which is then left behind in the big bowl. How is desalination useful? ‘The process of removing salt from saline water to make it suitable for human consumption or agriculture is called desalination. As the world’s population continues to grow, there is a need to find alternate sources of drinking water since fresh water resources are limited, Scientists are tapping the sun's energy and creating large- scale structures similar to our experiment to get drinking water from the oceans, which make up more than 70% of the surface of Earth. Vandana Gupta s soon as Miss Sonali entered Class VI to teach Science, the children went quiet. “School has begun and exams will start soon. You all should get serious about your studies,” she said sternly. “Bach one of you has to complete a project. You may choose from any topic that we studied till now or will study and make a model on it. You have 10 days to do it, Remember that the marks you score in the project will be added to your half- yearly grade.” The students started discussing their models after that. 20 . . ‘After ten days, Miss Sonali announced, “Tomorrow everyone will bring their model and keep it in the Science Lab. ‘Then during the Science period, cach one will present their model for two minutes.” ‘The next day, as soon as everyone came to school, they kept their Gm models in the science > lab. When they returned from the assembly, Vihaan was already in the class. “You didn't attend the assembly today?” Amit asked. “L was late, so I came straight to the class”, Vihaan answered. When the bell rang for the science perio everyone walked to the lab excitedly and stood next to their models. Miss Sonali was waiting. “You all have worked hard and made wonderful models. Now I invite you to speak about your model,” Miss Sonali said. Sonam who was fond of music had made a model of Jal Tarang, a musical instrument. She had filled bowls with water at different levels, and tapped them with a pair of sticks to create different musical notes from cach bowl. She played the tune of the song ‘We shall overcome’ onit. “This is so good. Tell us something about it. How are the different notes produced?” Miss Sonali asked. “Miss Sonali, this is a very old instrument. Earlier, it used to be played with metal bowls. When people started making China clay vessels, they realised that the sound produced from them was sweeter. Because of the different levels of water, when the sound waves travel through water, each bowl produces a different note. The lower the water level, the higher the note. When the water level is increased, the note becomes lower, In this way, we can play July (Firs!) 2023 . ‘ any tune,” Sonam explained. Then it was Nakul’s turn. He had placed two flowers—one with a blue tint and one white—with their stalks, in two different glasses. One glass had normal water and the other had ink added to the water. “Nakul, what have you made?” Miss Sonali asked. “Ma’am, I experimented to see how the roots and trunks of plants carry water and natural resources from the ground to other parts of the flower. The flower which is in the glass filled with ink water, has become blue, whereas the flower in the normal water is white,” Nakul said. “Very interesting,” said Miss Sonali. Suddenly, she was interrupted by Aarav who came and said, “Miss Sonali, I had made a model on gears, but Vihaan is standing near it and telling me that it is his model.” 21 “Aaray, you can speak when your turn comes,” Miss Sonali said. “But Miss Sonali, Vihaan’s name is written on it,” Aarav said, troubled. “Aaray, go to your place. Tell me about it when it’s your turn,” Miss Sonali said firmly and Aarav went away sadly. Monika had made a water filter. She had cut the bottom of a bottle and placed it upside down. She had placed a cotton cloth on it, then sand, then a layer of charcoal pieces, and on the top she had put gravel. When she poured dirty water from the top, clean water filled in the vessel kept below, drop by drop. Amit had made a battery by piercing one zinc and one copper nail in a potato. When both the nails were connected with a wire, 22 a small bulb lit, making the potato a battery. “We can make the same using orange or lemon. Electricity is produced when electrons travel through two metals in an acidic medium,” Amit explained. “Well done!” saying, Miss Sonali moved to the next table. Vihaan and Aarav were standing at the table. Vihaan’s name was written on the model, whereas Aarav insisted that he had made the model. “Alright tell me how you made this model and what does it show?” Miss Sonali asked Aarav. “T cut four circles of different sizes out of cardboard. I cut spikes of the same size atound the circles. Then I pinned them from the centre on cardboard in such a way that they could be rotated. I placed the four circles close to each other in a manner that when one circle rotated, the second, third and fourth circles also rotated simultaneously. On rotating, we can see that in the time taken by the largest circle to complete one rotation, the smaller circles could rotate three to four times. If there are 40 spikes on the largest circle and 10 spikes on the smaller circle, when the largest circle rotates only once, the smaller circles rotate three to four times in the same given time. The speed of the smaller circle is more than thatof the larger one. July (Firs!) 2023 . The gears of the car also work on the same science and it helps the car to move at different speeds on different gears. To make the model look beautiful, I have painted cach part with a different colour,” Aarav added. “Anybody can say all of this because it is visible and Miss Sonali has also taught this in the class also,” Vihaan said, mocking Aarav. “All right, now I will tell you one thing that is not visible,” Aarav said. “I painted my model with pink colour and wrote my name with yellow colour. But since it got spoilt while using, I painted it with brown colour, and on drying, I wrote my name with black colour,” Aarav disclosed. “But this has been painted blue with Vihaan’s name in brown colour. We'll have to remove the paint to know the truth”, Miss Sonali said. Now Vihaan got agitated and said, “No Miss Sonali, what’s the need to do that?” Seeing the scared look on Vihaan’s face, Miss Sonali felt that something was amiss. She scratched a little paint off Vihaan’s name and saw the colours that Aarav had mentioned. “Aarav is right. He has made this model. Vihaan, where is your model? Did you not make one?” she asked. “No, Ma’am, I had brought a model,” said Vibaan, 23 “Then where is it?” Vibaan took a flower pot from a corner of the room and placed it on the table. “This is my model.” “What's this?” Miss Sonali asked. “You had taught us that on sowing seeds, they sprout and grow into aew plants. I have shown that.” “But you have brought an old plant. If you had sown seeds, at the end of 10 days, a small new plant would have grown, not a big plant like this. When did you write your name on Aarav’s model?” Miss Sonali asked. Now Vihaan told the truth. “When I went to keep my model in the lab, I saw the beautiful models by others, my model looked shabby to me. So I didn’t go to assembly and I painted my name over Aarav’s name.” “If only you had used the time spent in making your model instead. Apologise to ‘Aarav and make a new model and submit it next week,” said Miss Sonali. Vihaan promised himself that he would never again repeat this mistake and will submit a new model next week @ July (First) 2023, : “ 25 YES, BUT THERE'S NO WATER IN IT. Anjali was having some warm idli for breakfast with Grandma, when she said, “I wish every morning would be just like this!” “My deat, enjoy till it lasts,” said Grandma. Anjali thought about what grandma meant, and soon she realised that school vacations were over and school would start after the weekend ended, 30 . . “Vacations are over! I do not want to return to school anymore,” said Anjali, bitterly. “I thought you enjoyed going to school, ‘Anjali. You loved playing with your friend Aditya, didn’t you?” asked Grandma, confused. “Nani, he is changing schools as his family is shifting to Pune. Now, I don’t like my school as it won't be fun anymore. Thad only one friend and he has left,” she cried. As their breakfast was over, Grandma didn’t say anything and wondered how she could cheer up Anjali. ‘The afternoon was Anjali’s favourite time of the day as she would watch the afternoon light brighten her room. “Flow pretty the sky looks!” exclaimed Grandma, walking inside Anjali’s room. But Anjali did not respond as she was busy wondering how she could ever go to school, “Nani, can I just never go to school?” she asked, wistfully. Grandma asked, “Why, my dear?” “Because school will never be the same again!” said Anjali Though her grandma knew the reason, she still wanted to confirm it. “Is it because Aditya will not be coming to school anymore?” she asked, softly. “Yes, Nani” agreed Anjali. “Oh! How many students are there in your class?” asked her grandma. “There are 40 students. Why?” wondered Anjali. “Wow! So many! Well, then you can make anew friend,” suggested Grandma. Anjali thought for a moment and sighed. She replied, “But they will not be the same as Aditya.” ‘Then Grandma suddenly got up as she remembered something and came back with a box of chocolates. “Here, have some!” she said as she offered the box to Anjali. “Wow! Roads, streets, neighbourhoods, schools, bus stands, stations, and even hospitals are crowded,” added Simran. “Why are you silent, Ayushi? Say something,” Zainab urged. “L agree, Zainab. I, too, see crowds everywhere. Anyway, India has now overtaken China to become the most populous country in the world in terms of population,” Ayushi said, expressing her concern. July (First) 2023 ‘The four girls studied in a school in Delhi. Even though they were junior school students, they loved discussing current issues, Today, being a Sunday, they had come to exercise at the park, After jogging, they all sat on a bench to relax. Continuing Ayushi’s point, Zainab said, “You're right, Ayushi! Now, the population of India has crossed 1.43 billion. Every sixth person in the world is Indian. 16% of the world’s population lives in India, while we only have 2.4% of the world’s land.” “You're absolutely right, Zainab! We need to think how did the population of India increased so much?” asked Ayushi. “T have an answer to that question,” chipped in Simran, 47 Causes of rapid population growth Migration “Hey Simran, how do you know that?” asked Maria. “My brother, Rajan is a student at the famous Indian Institute of Population Sciences (IPS) in Mumbai. He has many books on the subject,” Simran explained. “And you, bookworm, you must have devoured all those books!” Maria joked. ‘They all laughed. “T haven't read all the books, but I was curious to know about how population increases,” said Simran, confidently. “So, Simran, tell us, how did India’s population increase so much?” Ayushi asked. “Well, Ayushi, there are three reasons that determine the population of any country. ‘They are the birth rate, death rate, and migration. In the case of India, migration is of least importance,” explained Simran. “So, you mean only two factors are important for the growth of India’s population: birth rate and death rate?” Zainab clarified. “Exactly, Zainab!” Simran confirmed. “But how, Simran?” asked Ayushi. “Look, if we consider 1950 as the base year, India’s birth rate at that time was 44.17, and the death rate was 28.2,” Simran said. “Hey Simran, explain it in simpler terms. Don’t get caught up in numbers,” Maria said. “In simpler terms, say in 1950 the population of India was 1000 people. If in a year, 44 children were born and 28 died, then the difference between the birth rate and the death rate in the population is 16, And next year, in 1951, the population of India would be 1016 people,” Simran explained. “Oh yes, now I understand! If there’s a big difference between the birth rate and the death rate, then the population will increase rapidly,” Ayushisaid. “Exactly! Currently, the birth rate of our country is 17, and the death rate is 7.4. That’s why our population is still increasing, but its growth rate has decreased,” Simran replied. “But Simran, I don’t understand one thing, India’s population was 34 crores at the time of independence. How did our population increase from 34 crores to 143 crores in just 75 years? An increase of about 110 crores!” Zainab asked in astonishment. “Well, Zainab, various factors have contributed to this rapid population growth. The agricultural revolution, industrial revolution, white revolution, advancements in medical science, improvements in public health, and environmental cleanliness have all increased the average lifespan. In 1850, the average age of an Indian was only 35 years, but now it has doubled to 70,” Simran explained. “In the olden times, epidemics like the plague, cholera, long and terrible wars, July (First) 2023 * ¥ and natural calamities like famines and floods resulted in significant casualties, thus keeping the population in check,” Zainab remarked. “Zainab, you have good knowledge on this subject too,” Simran complimented. “I believe that the availability of food, improved law and order, and rising living standards are also contributing to the population growth of India,” said Ayushi thoughtfully. “That's a great point, Ayushi! When everyone has enough to eat, there is good law and order, and decent living conditions, people tend to live longer,” Simran agreed. “Okay, Simran, one last thing! ‘The fertility rate or the number of children a woman would have and our current birth rate are low, yet our population is still increasing tapidly, Why is that?” Zainab inquired. 49 “Zainab, it's true that our female fertility rate has decreased from 5.9 in 1950 to only 2.1 now. However, PS India’s base population of 143 \ ctores is already enormous. } Unless the female fertility rate reaches 2 ot below, our population will continue to grow. Even if it’s low in percentage, an increase will still be significant,” Simran explained. “Wow, Simran, you have explained such a complex subject in such simple words. We all need to be aware of this for the sake of our country,” Ayushi commented. After their discussion, the four friends left the park, walking hand in hand@ 50 t = ~ July (First) 2023 CHAMAAK,
