RESEARCH PLAN

What is a good research plan?

What is a RESEARCH PLAN?
- This is to be written prior to experimentation. This is
a framework that shows how you intend to approach
your topic.

- Details the rationale, research questions, methodology

and risk assessment of the proposed research.
RATIONALE
1. Includes a brief synopsis of the background that supports your
research problem and explain why this research is important
and if applicable, explain any societal impact of your research,

2. Answers the big “SO WHAT” that every adviser, peer reviewer
and editor has in mind when they critique your work.

3.
RESEARCH QUESTION
Pinpoints exactly what you want to find out in your
work. A good research question is essential to guide
your research paper, dissertation, or thesis.
Goals/Expected outcomes/Hypothesis
1. Describes what your research is trying to achieve
and explain why you are pursuing it. They
summarize the approach ad purpose of your
projects and help focus your research.
PROCEDURES
1. Details all procedures and experimental design to
be used for data collection
2. Based on a certain scientific methodology
RISK AND SAFETY
1. Identify any potential risks and safety precautions
needed
DATA ANALYSIS
1. Examine, organize, and interpret data to answer
research questions, or either accept or reject
hypotheses.
BIBLIOGRAPHY
1. List at least five (5) major references (e.g.,
science journal articles, books, internet
sites) from your literature review using APA
style formatting and citation.
PROJECT DATA
LOGBOOK
PROJECT DATA LOGBOOK

This is an organizational tool used by student researchers to organize

and record narrative and evidence including the planning, research
design, drawings/illustrations, procedures, data collection, analysis, and
presentation, inferences and conclusion.
PROJECT DATA LOGBOOK
1. Detailed and accurate notes in paragraphs or bullets show consistency and
thoroughness which will be helpful when writing the research paper.

2. It is also recommended to use hardbound record notebooks to avoid tearing out pages,
write entries using permanent pens, and minimize erasures.

3. Procedures are to be presented in flow charts and data in organized tables. Each data
entry (qualitative and quantitative) should also be accurately recorded, dated and signed
by the supervising adult.

4. Each data logbook entry should also be signed by the supervising adults during the
research activity
PROJECT DATA LOGBOOK

If erasure cannot be avoided, strike the word,

phrase, sentence, or figure or numbers once
and countersign each. Avoid using correction
tapes and the likes.
DRILLS!
ACTIVITY: PASS IT ON!

1. Now that you have learned the different components of a

research plan and what will be put on a data logbook, let’s
test your knowledge!
True or False?
A rationale does not need to explain the societal impact of your research

FALSE
The research plan is to be completed after the experimentation

FALSE
Research questions asks and states the problem being addressed

TRUE
Recording data in the data logbook does not need to be that accurate

TRUE
This is an organizational tool used by student researchers to organize and record data from the research
process.
