II. BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE:

Reading is a lifelong skill to be used both at school and throughout life.

According to Anderson, Hiebert, Scott. & Wilkinson, reading is a basic life

skill. It is a cornerstone for a child’s success in school and indeed, throughout

life. Without the ability to read well, opportunities for personal fulfillment and

job success inevitably will be lost (1985). Despite its importance, reading is

one of the most challenging areas in the education system. The ever –

increasing demand for high levels of literacy in our technological society

makes the problem even more pressing. (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998)

Students’ attitudes regarding the purposes for reading also influence their

ability to read. If students want to get the most out of the materials they are

assigned, they have to learn to read critically or analytically. The idea here is

that when we read something, the purpose is to try to understand what the

author’s intention is.

Reading is one of the obstacles in achieving quality education of a

school. This is also a major problem by the Department of Education

According to the department many learners have difficulty in reading. They

cannot read even a simple passage. And according to some news, there are

freshmen students who are slow in reading and cannot comprehend.

R.A. 10556 also known as “The Araw ng Pagbasa Act of 2013,” the state

likewise recognizes the importance of promoting reading as a shared activity among

the youth, families, educators and the private sector, thereby emphasizing personal

interaction and facilitating the exchange of ideas throughout the country.” Therefore,

everyone should work together to help a child to read.

As a teacher, teaching reading is one of my important roles. I want that my grade

1 learners are proficient readers. This is the reason why I conceptualized an

intervention entitled CLEAR to improve the reading comprehension and vocabulary

skills of my grade 1 learners.

III. OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED OUTCOME

CLEAR (Creative Learning and Enjoyable Activities in Reading)

Specifically, Project CLEAR aims to:

1. Improve the reading performance of grade 1 using mother tongue

2. Improve their vocabulary

3. Develop the genuine love for reading among Grade 1 learners

IV. TARGETS AND BENEFICIARIES

The targets and beneficiaries of Project CLEAR are the 21 Grade 1 learners of

Cardenas Elementary School.

Project CLEAR is a reading intervention designed to develop the reading and

vocabulary skills of Grade 1 learners of Cardenas Elementary School.

First, learners will be exposed to reading materials using their mother tongue

which is Tagalog. These stories are short and composed of 5 to 6 sentences. Each

story has 5 questions to be answered by the learners after reading. Answering can

be done orally or in a written form. In the preliminary, the teacher will motivate

the learners and unlock some difficult words so that their vocabulary will also be

developed.

Second, same stories will be presented but this time it will be presented in

poem but the last word of each line is blank. The learners will supply the missing

word by choosing the right word which is written in a strip of paper.

For the third activity, teacher will then remove the strip of paper so that the

learners will be the one to supply the missing word. This is done to develop their

memory and their love for reading. I believe that presenting the story in different

forms will help the learners understand the story well.
