HAVE YOU EVER
HEARD ABOUT
ROMAN
BRITAIN?
Wait... Roman baths
in the uk?
• In the world, there are many Roman baths, most of which are (as
you could probably tell) in Rome.
• But ancient Romans didn't live only in the Rome, they had
many provinces.
• One of them was called Roman Britain.
• It consisted of a large part of the island of Great Britain. The
occupation lasted from AD 43 to AD 410.
• The Romans had a huge influence on
the culture, economy, agriculture and architecture in Britain at the
time.
• And one of the beautiful things they left there are the Roman Baths
in the city of Bath.
INTRODUCTION
• The Roman Baths (thermae) are a collection of bath
houses that were built during the reign of the Roman
empire in Britain.
•
• Today, visitors can explore the Roman Baths complex
as a form of "museum" with many attractions.
•
• Location: in the center of Bath (city) in the West of
England
•
QUICK HISTORY
• According to a legend the springs were
discovered by a pre-Roman Celtic
king Bladud, who built the city of Bath
around it.
• The bathing complex was built between 60
and 70 AD in the first few decades of Roman
Britain.
• The springs of the Baths were dedicated to the
Celtic goddess of healing SULIS and Roman
goddess of wisdom MINERVA.
• The thermae were mostly important for two
reasons: architectural and societal.
•
QUICK HISTORY
• The Baths were designed to accept Romans from
all social classes (as long as they were free).
•
• Women had to wait for the men to leave the
baths before they could enter.
•
• The Roman Baths were announced as
a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
•
OTHER ROMAN BATHS?
• Baths were a common feature of cities throughout the whole Roman
empire.
• In addition to public baths, wealthy citizens often had their own private
baths constructed as a part of their villa.
•
But are any other preserved baths except the Roman baths in England?
• Even though the Roman baths in Bath are the only ones in UK, there are a
few others, mainly in Rome.

TYPICAL ELEMENTS OF ROMAN BATHS
• The Roman baths had probably more
parts than you think.
• Typical features were:

ü Superheated sweeting rooms
ü Hot water indoor pool
ü Unheated cold indoor bath (in the center of the
complex)

HOT SPRING
• The water is sourced from rainfall
on the nearby Mendip Hills.
• It bubbles up from the ground into
the baths.
• The water's temperature is around
46 °C.
• It rises here at the rate of 1,170,000
