MONETARY POLICY

Definition Rate
Repo Rate The rate at which the central bank lends money to commercial banks in the 4%
event of any shortfall of funds.
Reverse Repo The rate at which the central bank borrows money from the commercial 3.35%
Rate banks.
Statutory The minimum percentage of deposits that a commercial bank has to 18%
Liquidity Ratio maintain in the form of liquid cash, gold or other securities. It is basically
the reserve requirement that banks are expected to keep before offering
credit to customers.
Cash Reserve The minimum amount, as specified by the Central Bank, to be maintained 4%
Ratio by the Commercial banks of the public deposits with the Central Bank.
Marginal Provision made by the RBI through which scheduled commercial banks can 4.25%
Standing obtain liquidity overnight, in the event that inter-bank liquidity completely
Facility Rate dries up. This is a facility for emergencies, through which banks obtain
liquidity support at the MSF rate, which is a rate higher than the repo rate.

Bank Rate Bank rate is the rate charged by the central bank for lending funds to 4.25%
commercial banks. It differs from the repo rate in that it doesn’t involve any
collaterals (here, securities)
