Important points for The Tempest

ACT 1 SCENE 1
 There was a storm that split the ship in two.
 they have just come from Tunis, in Africa, where Alonso’s daughter, Claribel,
has been married to the prince.

Act 1 Scene 2

 When Miranda came to the island she was not quite 3 years old.
 It has been 12 years since they have been on the island.
 Antonio, Miranda’s Uncle was treacherous/ perfidious.
 Prospero handed the state over to him and the government so he could focus on
learning magic. Antonio knew how to grant favours, deny favours and he knew who
to promote from who to hold back. With that he changed out the government so could
all be on his side. He was like an ivy sticking to a tree drawing out all the power and
authority Prospero had.
 Antonio made an alliance with the King of Naples because of how thirsty he was for
power. He gave the King a sum of money annually and swear subservience to
him( Antonio would show that he accepted the king’s power . Then they would
proceed to place the free dukedom under the king’s control
 The secret agreement between Prospero and King Alonso was that in return for
Antonio’s annual tribute and homage/ supremacy/respect, king Alonso would drive
Prospero and Miranda out of Dukedom and out of Milan and make Antonio Duke of
Milan.
 Prospero really loves his daughter because in this scene Miranda was telling him what
a burden she must have been but prospero reassured her that her smile was the onethat
kept her going.
 When they were being thrown out Gonzalo provided Prospero with rich garments and
linen and other necessities such as some of Prospero’s magic books.
 Ariel appeared as a terrifying fire in the ship
 There was more than one ships and those ones Ariel scattered and they met back at
the Mediterranean believing that they just witnessed the death of the king.
