A falu már sötét és csöndes. Alig kilenc óra pedig, s már nyugodni
hajlott minden. Mintha a fák is álomban volnának; a fák, a házak, ólak,
hidak, sövények, mindenek aludnának. Csak a magas jegenyefák állnak
ébren-formán. Mint a tábori őrök, mozdulatlanul álldogáló óriás sovány
őrök.
De okos rend, hogy ilyen hamar nyugvásra tér az ember. Mert drága
a petróleum. Elég ha egy ember virraszt a faluban, a bakter. Ámbátor az
sincs mindig ébren. A kilencet, tizet csak elkiáltja, de már a többit ritkán.
Kit is érdekelne, hogy hány az óra, mikor alszunk?
Hát mondom csönd volt, sötét és csillagos éjszaka a faluban.
S ime a nagy csöndben megsiramlik a lélekharang:
