Unit 7: Spare Time—Past Tense Simple (revision) Time: 50 minutes

Lesson Aims:
I. Achievement aims:
 The students will be better able to use the irregular verbs in affirmative sentences,
interrogative sentences and negative sentences;
 By the end of the lesson, the students will be better able to use the verbs in the
past form accurately, in appropriate situations and/or contexts of their own;

II. Procedure aims:


 The students will work individually, in pairs and in groups in order to revise
the use of the past tense simple and they will practise using it orally and in
writing;
 The Ss will take part in a contest (Irregular Verbs).

Stages of the Lesson

Warm-up: After the teacher greets the students, introduces the guest and asks if anybody
is absent, she starts the lesson with the warmer “Conversation Lines.” (8 minutes)

Activity 1
Aim: to check the Ss’s comprehension of regular and irregular verbs
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-T
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure: The teacher reads a story and the Ss have to clap their hands every time they
hear a verb in the past tense.
Materials: a worksheet

Activity 2
Aim: - to check the Ss’ comprehension of past tense simple and to elicit the way the past
tense simple is formed
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: The teacher divides the Ss in groups of three and each group is given hand-
outs and pictures. They have to arrange the pictures and the sentences according to the
events of the story that they have just heard.Then the T asks them to choose a sentence in
the past with a regular verb and a sentence with an irregular verb. The T elicit the way the
past tense is formed.
Materials: hand-out; pictures; blackboard

Activity 3
Aim: - to practise the affirmative form of the tense
Interaction: Ss-Ss; T-Ss
Time: 8 minutes
Procedure: The Ss work individually to do an exercise. They have to change the verbs in
brackets into the past simple. Then they switch the worksheets and correct each others’
sentences. The Ss read them and the teacher corrects whenever necessary.

Activity 4
Aim: - to practise the interrogative form of the tense
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 8 minutes
Procedure: In pairs the Ss do another exercise, practising the interrogative form of the
past simple. The teacher corrects whenever necessary.

Activity 5
Aim: - to practise the negative form of the tense
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 8 minutes
Procedure: The Ss work in pairs to practise the negative form of the past tense. The
teacher corrects whenever necessary.
Materials: worksheets

Homework – Ss get two exercises as homework and another one for class for the next
time. (3 minutes)
