PART ONE: THEORETICAL YIELD, PERCENTAGE YIELD AND THE LIMITING

REACTANT
1. a) Calcium hydroxide, used to neutralize acid spills, reacts with hydrochloric acid,
according to the unbalanced equation
Ca(OH)2 + HCl → CaCl2 + H2O
If you hae spilt 6.3 mol of the acid, and put 2.8 mol of the hydroxide, what is the
limiting reagent? (3 pts)

b) How many moles of the excess remain? (2 pts)

2. a) Huge quantities of sulfur dioxide are produced from zinc sulphide, according to
the equation below
ZnS(s) + O2(g) → ZnO(s) + SO2(g)

If the typical yield is 86.78%, how much SO2(g) should be ezpected if 4,897 g
ZnS(s) was used? (5 pts)

PART TWO: THE GAS LAWS

A. The following illustrations are real-life examples of applications of some of the

gas laws. Identify which of the gas laws explains the examples and write on the box
how the gas law may be applied (2 points each)

B What are the basic assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory? Which of these
assumptions are most nearly correct and which are violated to some extent by real
gases (5 points)

B. Solve the following word problems and write your solution on the space
provided.

1. How much pressure is needed to change the volume of a dry gas from 70
litres to 45 litres keeping the temperature constant? The original pressure is
760 mm Hg. (3 points)

2. An empty flask has a mass of 47.392 g and 47.816 g when filled with acetone
vapor at 100.°C and 745 mm Hg. If the volume of the flask is 247.3 mL, what
is the molar mass of the acetone? (3 points)
