Standards/Kindergarten-Standards.pdf.aspx?lang=en-US

Lesson Summary:

In this lesson students will trace the letter using their dominate hand. The purpose of this lesson is for
students to use the writing tool of their choice to see the steps it takes to perfectly write and create upper and
lowercase letters. Students will also trace over shapes; this will help students with the concept and different
dimension of each shape while also incorporating mathematical patterns. These lessons will entail different
letters, shapes and even pages with each individual child’s name printed on it. Each child would know how
to effectively read and write their letters and their own names while also identifying the letters and shapes.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will span over the course of a 26 weeks and will be broken down into 30-minute increments
daily. I plan to give students a week to perfect each letter while learning the sound and correct pronunciation
of each letter. Students will also be asked to complete at least 20-minutes at home daily working on tracing
and free hand writing their letters. By the end of the school year students would successfully be able to read
and write their names and alphabets. Upper and lowercase letters would be perfected over time while also
strengthening the students’ abilities in writing on the lines.

Commentary: I anticipate a few challenges in this lesson due to the fact of just working with a class of 32
children who all not only have different learning levels but write with different hands. Teaching them how to
correctly hold the writing tool would seem to be more of a challenge for me. It would take a lot of time and
patience to fully get the students to gather the proper form as well and perfecting the technique. I plan to
engage the children with different songs and videos showcasing the different sounds of letter recognition. I
want to keep the children engaged so that it becomes more than just an assignment or lesson to them.
Instructional Procedures:

‘Day 1:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will be handed an alphabet worksheet where they would be
instructed to trace the letters on the sheet following the dots.
20 minutes in: I will then have students turn in their worksheets then I will ask them to write the letters they
learned on a blank sheet of paper. There will be no assistance as for dots or pre-written letters. They would
have to use memory recognition and free hand to write the letters on their own. This would allow the
students to see their progress and practice their handwriting skills. Learning to write is a major task and
teaching children is even harder so as the students are rewriting the letters I will walk around and observe
students’ overall concentration, focus and their ability to complete the task asked of them. Students can ask
for help but encouraged to try their best on their own. There is no right or wrong way.
Describe what you and your students will be doing as the lesson unfolds.

Day 2: Students will use their iPads to log into www.abcya.com to complete 30-minutes of educational
screen time. They can choose to continue tracing letters, playing spelling games, reading stories, or just
practicing writing using the app.
This will continue everyday for a week for 30-minutes a day.
Students will also be assigned homework which will include logging onto the app and completing more
assignments. They will also be asked to continue to go over their letters, spelling words, shapes and to
practice writing and drawing them.
This assignment is repetitive until all letters are completed then students would begin putting them together
to create words and then sentences.
Etc.

Pre-Assessment:
During the first week of school, I would give the students a pre-assessment so that I can get a feel of what
they already know and what level they are on. This assessment would consist of students identifying a few
letters and shapes from a flashcard that I would show them and ask them to read. I would them give them a
piece of paper and a pencil and ask them to write one of the letters that was previously shown to them. This
will help me get a basic concept on which areas each child needs individual help in. Although these would
be class lessons they are also individually assigned to the child’s level. For example, if one child is still
having trouble with the letter “A” or the square shape that child would not move on until they can fully grasp
the concept of the previous assignment. Just because they would “technically” be behind on the assignments
doesn’t mean they are behind. They may already know how to trace or write the letter “B” and would need
to spend less time on that lesson. I would also sit down with their parent or guardian to get a basic
understanding on where they child is on the learning scale. I want them to express their levels of concerns or
anything areas they want to extend further learning on. I plan for both the parents/guardians and I to work
closely to help these children reach the goals needed for them to succeed and move to the next grade.
Scoring Guidelines:
There would be no grading for the pre-assessment. This is just a study for my own personal files so
that I can see which areas each child needs assistance in. I would take the knowledge gathered from
these assessments to meet each child at the current learning level while getting them prepared for
their current level and next. The students would be at their full potential and learning level by the end
of the school year. From the beginning of my class to the end the children would come full circle in
their learning. Based on their knowledge from when they first entered my class will be how I
determine how to move forward with each lesson for each child.

I would conduct formative assessment every 3 months to see the students’ progress throughout the
time from their previous assessment.
Post-Assessment:
Every 3 months I would give a post-assessment in the form of a quiz. The quiz would consist of the letters,
shapes, and words we have previously gone over. The students will free-hand the letters, shapes and words
provided on the quiz. This will help me determine the progress of the child, we will use this information to
gather our next steps. By the first post-assessment my goal is that each student has the basic technique of
holding a writing tool and the basic steps on writing without tracing. Students will be asked to write out their
first name on the quiz I would also give a basic spelling text verbally because some students do better
verbally than on actual paper.
Scoring Guidelines:
Because we are dealing with young children, we always want to express encouragement so the
grading processing I would use is satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Grading will be based on how hard
they tried to complete the exam, how hard they tried to complete forming the letters and their overall
effort. These grades would be more for my personal use but students will be acknowledged for their
efforts.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Students who present to be more gifted would still be completing the same lessons as their peers however
they would be designed to meet the needs of the child. They will be presented with bigger words such as
words that have a higher letter count. With kindergartners I would start with two letter words but for the
gifted children we will begin with three- or four-letter words depending on their advancement. The
instructions would be the same for all children as it is basic instructions however it would take more time or
less time depending on the child. I would have the gifted students pair up with their peers to help them reach
their greatest potential and level as well.

For the students who may be struggling I would carve out time to tutor and help them. Provide extra
assignments they could do in class and at home to further their progress. I would meet with parents so we
can come up with a game plan to help the student succeed. We would work together hand in hand to make
sure each child meets their greatest potential all while having fun learning the basic fundamentals.
Extension
www.abcya.com/grades/k/letters
This is an educational site for children in grades K-6. This site has different educational assignments and
games for students to learn in every subject. The site is very child friendly and even incorporates holiday
themed activities. Students can practice their reading, writing, math and even art on abcya.com. Students
will benefit greatly from this app because not only will they learn but they will have fun doing it and at the
own pace. They can pick how they want to learn from connecting dots to bingo. This would make the
learning experience more enjoyable not only for the child but for the parent/guardian.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Homework would be the same as the classwork. I want children to really grasp this concept and this takes
time. At their age not only are the just beginning to read and write but they are also learning which hand is
their dominate hand. So that is the first step, so with all of that we need to stick to consistency so what is
done at school would also be homework so that the students can could plenty of time in learning the letters,
writing the letters, and recognizing the sounds of each letter. Homework would consist of more technology
as I would want the students to log into YouTube to watch letter recognition videos and complete sight word
assignments and games on apps such as Splash learner and Sight words reading.

Interdisciplinary Connections
Mathematics would be incorporated in the apps as well as the worksheets provided. While the students trace
shapes, they will also count the points on each shape that they must connect to complete the shape. This will
be the beginning of mathematics for them. These will be simple math examples for them. I would also have
them count how many letters makeup a word and how many words makeup a sentence. This will not only
help the students in English but Math as well.

Additional Notes

All lessons in my class are based on the individual child. No child is the same and I am here to make sure
each child learns at their own rate to meet their greatest potential. This classroom is a safe space where the
only goal is to learn how to read, write and have fun. These lessons and assignments would make spelling
interesting to the students as they would be designed for the child and their learning level.
