for Europe
The following Starting Weapons Tables more accurately reflect the various national arsenals of European
combatants in the Third World War than that initially published by GDW in 1984 (it is also a departure from the
Ver. 2.x tables as well, in most cases). Players and referees will note that I have deleted weapons, which were
never fielded (i.e. the G-11 and HK-CAW), as well as added a number of weapons, which existed when the First
Edition Rules were put out, but which GDW didn’t include information on. Finally, I have added in those
weapons, which have been developed in the intervening years and entered the inventory. The only completely
fictional weapon on the list is the German MPi-36 assault rifle, which is a posited East German AK74 re-
chambered to fire 5.56N ammunition.
Readers will also note that I have broken down US starting weapons by branch, as there is some variability among
them. The outbreak of the war caught the US military in the midst of incorporating new smalls arms into the
inventory and replacing other weapons. When the war started, a number of "stop gap" weapons were procured on
an emergency basis for issue to units until new items (such as the M4 carbine) were available. This tendency was
complicated by the decline of the supply situation, with the end result that US military units were equipped with a
dizzying array of weapon systems.
The German list reflects the admixture of East and West German equipment. I have kept the Uzi and G-3 battle
rifle on the list with the assumption that some reserve units would still have those weapons at the time the war
broke out. German small arms in the Reunification War, like the American Army, represented, basically, a
"kitchen sink" approach to small arms procurement, with an assortment of weapons in use. Besides those weapons
listed, just about anything else made by the German arms industry (mainly Heckler & Koch and Walther) was
issued at some point during the war to German troops.
Information on Swedish weapons comes from Antenna's Twilight 2000 site. Statistics for Swedish weapons may
be found there. Some information on other European armies comes from Paul Mulcahy's T2K page, which also
contains statistics for many of the weapons listed here.
I have fairly good information concerning the current US, German, and Polish arsenals. Anyone with information
on the weapons used by the other nations (as well as those three if I have made a mistake along the way) please
feel free to email me and contribute information. Note that Italian starting weapons are identical to those presented
in ver. 2.x rules (M12 SMG, M92S Automatic Pistol, AR-70 Assault Rifle, and MAG Machinegun).
