Lasers and the Electromagnetic spectrum in medicine

There are many types of medicine in the word but do we really take
a minute to think what’s in it. During this talk I will be covering
medicine and the electromagnetic spectrum in medicine. A use of
lasers in medicine is Ophthalmology which is basically dealing with
the anatomy physiology and diseases of the eye. In this field of
science the use of lasers is very important as they need them to scan
the eye to see if it is working properly and functioning right. Even
though this function of a laser isn’t as important as lasers that look at
the brain and make sure everything okay up there these laser can
help prevent blindness and possibly help the blind start to see again.
This just shows you how important lasers are in this time of the
world. Lasers are more advanced than that that they can even create
images of the human body for medical purposes so that they can
examine disease and reveal diagnoses of the patient. Infrared is used
in many things in medicine one that I found interesting was using it
for chronic pain relief which is very interesting as when it is
administrated on the tender spot the mussels loosen up and the pain
which was just there will be relieved. Ultraviolet lamps are now used
as medical resources as if someone as damaged their bone with a
fracture or has a wound and are bed ridden they will not be getting
the sunlight (ultraviolet) that the injury needs to heal and will take
longer to heal but with these lamps the wound will heal properly, so
with these lamps it is healing the injury not only quicker than lying in
bed out of sunlight but it is also healing it properly. While this is
amazing that it can heal wounds quicker and more efficient, too
much ultraviolet light can have extremely harmful effects, too much
exposure to these ultraviolet lights can result in many different cases
of skin cancer which is a horrible thing so these lights are incredibly
dangerous as well as very helpful. X-rays are used by the energy
particles called photons being absorbed at different rates and then
this pattern shows up on the x-ray image. The dense parts show up
as clear white areas and the softer areas eg heart lungs ect are
shown as darker areas, this in turn will show if anything is fractured
or broken and if it is it can show where it will need repaired. A C.A.T.
scan is when a computer takes data from several x-ray images of
inside a human's or animal's body and changes them into pictures on
a monitor. This can be very useful as it will give a more in-depth look
at what the body looks like. X-rays can be detected with photogenic
plates but these plates are very old and are now replaced with film.
The use of gamma rays in medicine is important as it is used to kill
and treat certain cancers and tumours as well as detecting brain and
cardiovascular abnormalities. These rays can also be very harmful as
they can cause damage to our bodies and cells
The end.
