EXECUTION OF THE INSPECTION: 5.1 ToFD Calibration Scans A time calibration and a reference scan have to be performed on calibration standards of same material, thickness and diameter pipe (See attached sketch in Annexure-A). 5.2 Time calibration The time calibration has to be performed to detect possible mistakes in the set up and malfunctions in the inspection equipment. The time calibration has to be performed: 1. Prior to inspection with each set-up. 2. During inspection after changing a probe and/or PCS (probe centre separation), pre- amplifier, battery. 3. After finishing the inspection using a same set up. 5.3 Calibration : Set the TOFD probes on the surface to be utilized for calibration and set the gain control 80 that the lateral wave amplitude is from 40% to 90% of the full screen height (FSH) and the noise (grass) level is less than 5% to 10% FSH. This is the reference sensitivity setting. For Multiple zone examinations when the lateral wave is not displayed, or barely discemible, ‘set the gain control based solely on the (grass) level 5.4 Sensitivity reference scans / conformation of sensitivity: The sensitivity reference scans have to be performed: 41. Prior to the inspection; 2. During inspection after changing a probe and/or PCS (probe centre separation), pre- amplifier, battery. The Sensitivity reference s in is performed on SGS Reference Blocks to assure the examined volume is completely covered by Ultrasound (Detectability of Reference Defects). For reference sensitivity setting a scan is to be produced with lateral wave amplitude between 40% to 90% of the Full Screen Height (FSH) and the noise (grass) level is less than 5% to 10% FSH. Requirement of the sensitivity is only detection of the reference reflectors. To confirm detection of relevant reference defects a scan of these reference defects is registered and stored after which is determined whether or not the reference defects can be recognised as such. Recognition of defects is depending on the gain of the signal. When the gain is optimised (all reference defects are visualised) the amplitude of surface wave and back wall are used as reference amplitude during inspection on the object. If not all artificial defects can be visualised with a certain set up, several scans have to be made using different set ups optimised for different parts of the weld volume. §.5 Scanning: TOFD D scan shall be carried out that is probe parallel position to the weld for weld examination. For categorization of defect, ultrasonic based technique or TOFD D scan i-e. The timeframe on the tofd image shall include surface, back wall and mode converted signal 9. SAFETY 1 2 3 General site safety shall be followed as per SGS HSE Management System but not limited to the following. All electrical equipments, junction boxes, cable and laptops shalll be inspected for any hazard before use of the equipment at site. All safety rules pertaining to work in the specific area must be adhered to ‘Permit to work’ systems may vary between different operating plants and all personnel shall have to familiarize themselves with the same and adhere to it at all times. Prior to the application for the permit to work, an assessment of the location of the unit, identification of any potential hazards is to be undertaken. It has to be ensured that safety preparations and suitable safe scaffolding exist. As the equipment involves electronics, proper enclosures need to be erected at the place of work to protect from heavy sunshine and unexpected rain. Barriers need to be erected if adjacent cleaning work takes place. In the event of thunder or lightning, work must be stopped immediately and equipment and power supply need to be switched off and crew shall retum to the ground. PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the TOFD inspection is being executed in a uniform and reproducible manner. This procedure provides the guidelines for the inspection of pre-service and in- service inspection of butt weld joints in pressure vessels, storage tanks, pipeline and piping. This document provides procedural requirements for the manual and encoded examination of welds and base materials using Ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction technique (ToFD). 2. SCOPE This procedure is applicable for TOFD Examination of: 8. Carbon steel and alloy steel in accordance with ASME Sec V-Arlicle-4 & b. Groove Welds of Pressure vessels, Piping/Pipeline, Tanks and boiler tubes. ¢. Computer software for TOFD displays shall include algorithms to linearize cursors or the waveform time-base to permit depth and vertical extent estimations. 8.5 Encoder : Encoders shall be calibrated per the manufacturer's recommendations and confirmed by ‘moving @ minimum distance of 20 in. (600 mm) and the displayed distance being #1% of the actual distance moved, 8.6 Encoder Confirmation: A calibration check shall be performed at intervals not to exceed one month or prior to first use thereafter, made by moving the encoder along a minimum distance of 20 in. (500 mm) and the displayed distance being +1% of the actual distance moved. 9. COUPLANT. The selected couplant shall provide an optimum ultrasound transmission and shall be the same for both calibration and reference scans and actual scan. Glycerin, water, grease, motor oil etc. can be used as couplant. For rough surfaces high viscous ‘couplants are recommended to be used. 10. EQUIPMENT CALIBARATION. The ultrasonic screen height linearity as well as the amplitude control linearity of the digital equipment shall be evaluated in accordance with ASME V, Art. 4 with a maximum interval of one year. After any repair or change of the digital equipment, a new calibration shall be executed. 10.1 CALIBRATION BLOCK. Block Curvature: Materials With Diameters Greater Than 20 in. (500 mm). For examinations in materials where the examination surface diameter is greater than 20 in. (500 mm), a block of essentially the ‘same curvature, or altematively, a flat basic calibration block, shall be used. Materials With Diameters 20 in.(500 mm) and Less. For examinations in materials where the examination surface diameter is equal to or less than 20 in. (500 mm), a curved block shall be used.
