System of Electric Cars

The Electric vehicles are classified by how electricity is

used to power the vehicle:

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric
01 power. Batteries are charged via regenerative braking and optionally by a generator connected
to the ICE

Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEVs) are HEVs, so they have an ICE, and they have an on-board
02 charger (OBC) that allows the batteries to be charged from an external electric power source

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) 100% use of electric power. Batteries charged from external

Charging in EV
9

The charging infrastructure plays a pivotal role on electric vehicles & can
be categorized based on the provided voltage type:

AC charging station transmits power from a single phase/poly phase at home or at

01 public/private outlet to an electric vehicle. The charging time takes several hours. (generally
not preferred)

DC charging station (fast charging) are suited for electric vehicles needing a lot of charge during
02 a short stop. The common power charging is ≥50 kW. The charging time usually takes 30-60min
for 80% charge

Tata Power
We all have heard of the statement, “India is not ready for EVs because it doesn’t have the required infrastructure yet!” Haven’t we?

Tata Power has set a target to expand its network of EV charging

stations to 700 by the end of the current financial year. It has already
crossed the number of 543

Tata Power is already established, it will make it very difficult

for other companies to enter (entry barrier). This will give a
great boost to the staggering infra of the EV industry.

On the charging infrastructure side, Tata Power

will take up the ownership — from installing
charging stations to supplying power. The
company will also install charging points in
households as well as commercial locations

If you are thinking about the electricity supply, renewable energy & sustainable energy sources, Tata Power
is already working on that. Have a look:
