Mini Performance Task: Function and its Graph
GUIDELINES
Instructions

The human body is made up of interesting bone measurements. Some of these form ratios that are consistent regardless of the
size and shape of the human body. A paleontologist makes use of skeletal measurements in predicting ancient animals. Aligned
with this concept, as a student who is currently studying BS Geology in University of Philippines-Diliman, one of your field
works is to accurately measure fossilized bones. In preparation for your fieldwork, you are to take the bone measurements of 10
people in your class using a tape measure, then present it in tabular form with corresponding graph for each of the following
ordered pairs of measurement:
 (height, radius)
 (wrist, hand span)
 (head, neck)
 (tibia, height)
 (radius, foot length
Step 1: In each group of at least 5 members, find the following measurements of 10 people in the class in centimeters:
Circumference of: head, wrist, neck
Length of: foot(from heel to longest toe),
Height(from head to heel)
radius (lower arm bone from wrist to elbow)
tibia (lower leg bone from ankle to kneecap)
hand span (tip of thumb to the tip of little finger with hand spread open)

Step 2: Tabulate the data and check if each measure is reasonable.

Step 3: Prepare a graph for each of the following ordered pairs of measurements:
a.) (height, radius) d.) (tibia, height)
b.) (wrist, hand span) e.) (radius, foot length)
c.) (head, neck)

Step 4: Write a conclusion with your data by answering the follow-up questions.
 Which sets are functions?
 Calculate and record the ratios for each person using the ordered pairs. What patterns do you find? Are the ratios which
appear to be constant?
 How do these constant ratios appear in the graph?
 What is the significance in knowing these ideas about body ratios based on your data?

Step 5: Encode your outputs following the format:

a. Font Style: Times New Roman
b. Font Size: 14 for titles; 12 for content
c. Paper size: Letter/Short (8.5 by 11 inches)
d. Margin: 1 inch in all sides
e. Line and Paragraph spacing: No spacing
f. Page number(bottom right)
