What is the BOP ?

The BOP or the Blow Out Preventer.It is a
mechanical device use to control , seal oil
and gas wells to prevent blowouts.
The BOP were development to deal with a
high pressures and uncontrolled flow
(formation kick).
Blowout preventers come in a variety of
styles, sizes and pressure ratings.
Several individual units serving various
functions are combined to compose a
blowout preventer.
Pressure rating in BOP is 2000psi to
15000psi (according to Schlumberger)
Two categories of blowout preventer are
most prevalent:
1. ram
2.annular.
{BOP stacks frequently utilize both types,
typically with at least one annular BOP
stacked above several ram BOPs.}
The primary functions of a blowout
preventer system are to:
▪ Regulating and monitoring well
pressure.
▪ Provide means to add fluid to the
wellbore.
▪ Shut in the well.
▪ Kill the well.
▪ Seal the wellhead (close off the
wellbore).
▪ Sever the casing or drill pipe (in case
of emergencies).
Annular preventer :
As menstiond there is 2 types of BOP on top is
an annular preventer.It called annular
preventer because surround the top of well
bore in the shape of the a ring and below it
ram prevents.
When well takes a kick and the BOP is open
well fluids force mud to flow up the well bore
and into the BOP stuck when driller closes the
annular BOP flow stops.usually the drillers
close the annular BOP first. The closed
annular BOP diverts the flow of the chock line
which goes to the chock manifold.the driller
can open the valve on the chock line and
safely circulate the kick out of the well
through the choke manifold.
And The way it works is by closes in drill
pipe drill collar or any shape tubular in the
well.
