world. His over 150 strong collections of icons ranging from celebrities to musicians and
endangered species of his time are exceptional.

SID MAURER: THE ARTIST
Sid Maurer is a man of great and many stories. His long career in the world of art and
music began at seventeen when he was hired as assistant art director at Columbia
Records in New York City, where he spent weekends playing trumpet in Jazz clubs for
extra money. As the music business exploded, Maurer worked designing album covers
and promotional material for popular artists, many of whom live today in the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. Paintings and photographs were produced by Maurer and his co-worker at
the time...the young Andy Warhol. It was during this period that Maurer’s work as a
painter first gained recognition, appearing in galleries and auctions in New York, Los
Angeles, Paris and Spain.

In the early nineties, Maurer realized that the empire of music and art that he had helped
to build left him little time to pursue his true passion: painting. After years of living amidst
the excitement of New York (even befriending Marilyn Monroe in his apartment elevator!)
he decided on a quieter lifestyle. Maurer moved to Georgia, where he has lived ever since.
He created the series “Vanishing Georgia” and developed a vast catalog of works,
perfecting his personal style.

In the last decade, Maurer’s work has hung in a wide variety of venues, including the
U.C.L.A. campus, the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, California, the Georgia Capitol and
Retroback Exhibition Granada Spain 2011.

THE TECHNIQUE
The artworks created begin with images from assorted photographs that
inspire Maurer of people he has known, loved and believed to have made a
significant contribution to the betterment of mankind. With his creative eye
and gifted brush, he transforms photo images into the collectible
masterpieces of Sidney Randolph Maurer.

Maurer uses his own photography or blends photos given to him by

celebrities and/or photographers to create the underlying black-and-white
image. He then enlarges the image on a piece of plywood and gessoes the
wood. He takes exact measurements of both the wood and the final image
created (hair, mouth, dress, jewelry, etc.) so they are one and the same. He
then glues the photographic paper onto the wood in such a way that it is
fully and permanently affixed.

Listening to music that inspires him, Maurer bombards the image with
mixed media - crayon, acrylics, watercolor dyes, sumi ink and varnish -
anything that moves him in the artistic process, to yield a rendering that
does justice to the subject.
