largest Lithuanian higher education institution.

Vilnius University is a classical university with over 430 years of academic


traditions and the widest range of study programs in Lithuania. The university
offers an academic environment focused on excellence in research and teaching.
Vilnius University is 1st in Lithuania according to national ranking. It is the most
popular and most acknowledged higher education establishment among Lithuanian
secondary school graduates.

THE CITY
Vilnius the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 554,060
(838,852 together with Vilnius County) as of 2011.It is located in the southeast of
the country. It is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, after Riga.

Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district
municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record
of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.

Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is


known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture, declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being
described as the “Jerusalem of Lita" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the
North" as he was passing through in 1812. In the year 2009, Vilnius was the
European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz.

EXCHANGE
STUDIES

Every year over 400 international non-degree students study at Vilnius University. The
term “international student” is applied to those students who have completed their prior
education in any other country but Lithuania.
International students who come for a period of study to Vilnius University fall into two
categories: exchange and degree students.

After admission students are provided with the Letter of Acceptance and the
information package which is uaually sent to the student's permanent address
within 3 weeks after the receipt of application documents, but not earlier than May
15 (Autumn semester) and October 15 (spring semester).

Application for the accommodation
Accommodation in Vilnius University international dormitories is available only for
Vilnius University students during the academic year (i.e. from September 1st until
June 30th). Application for Accommodation must be submitted at least two months
before the scheduled arrival and sent by one of these means:

The Housing Request must be completed in capital letters and students must
contact with the Accommodation Officer Ms Ausra Kuzminskaite by email for their
beforehand reservation to January 15th. All enquiries or questions regarding to the
accommodation should be sent to the Accommodation Office too.
INSURANCE All international students are supposed to have medical insurance valid in
Lithuania for the study period.
Health insurance for EU citizens
Students from EU countries are not required to have any special health insurance.
European insurance card or form E111 confirming that a student has EU health
insurance, valid in Lithuania.
Health insurance for non EU citizens
Students from non EU countries may obtain their health insurance either in their
country or in Lithuania. It costs approximately 50 litas per month or more if you
take it in Lithuania. Students from non EU countries applying for visa have to
prove to the migration office that they have a valid health insurance. The following
requirements for the insurance contract (policy) have to be fulfilled:
 The health insurance contract (policy) shall guarantee that all basic
medical assistance costs and travel expenses which may arise in
connection with the return, for health reasons, of an alien to homeland
(medical transportation, including escort by medical brigade or a doctor)
will be covered;
 The following information shall be indicated in the insurance policy:
 Number of Health insurance contract (policy);
 Particulars of the insurance undertaking (name, address of registered
office, telephone and fax numbers);
 Full name of insured person;
 The amount of health insurance contract (not less then 20000 Litas);
 Duration of health insurance contract (at least till the end of study period);
 Territorial coverage of health insurance contract (policy);
 Non-insured events.

EXPECTED Costs of living


COSTS
A student is expected to spend approximately 600 litas per month for food. The
price for a meal at the VU canteen or cafeteria ranges from 8 to 20 litas. The price
of a monthly ticket for public transport within the city is from 14,00 (for bus or
trolleybus) to 20,00 Litas (combined ticket for bus and trolleybus). According to
recent calculations, the total monthly living expenses of a single student are
around 1200 litas, accommodation included.
