NOTE: At times we are requested to carry out approvals for Tandem or Dual tows, FBA’s policy on this is Tandem tows should be discouraged however we will not necessarily not approve. The first step is to enquire whether their Underwriters will cover a tandem tow prior to us reviowing the requirements, if they do and assuming we will progress further and approve then details will be inserted as paragraph 5 with the following paragraphs re-numbered. The format would be similar to paragraph 4 with some essential changes such as the intermediate tow line etc. ‘The following are our guidelines for Tandem and Dual tows; A Tandem Tow is considered to be when two, or possibly more, vessels are towed by intesmediate tow line(s) behind a single tug, ‘This office will never approve a triple tow. ‘A Dual Tow is considered to be when a single tug tows two vessels using separate tow lines from separate tow drums. AA) Some reasons for discouraging Tandem Tows are as follows: 1 Contact damage to either of the units when connecting and disconnecting 2 ‘The expectation of negative impact from the tow contractor to provide emergency tow equipment on each barge and providing two emergency tow ropes. 3 Should the tow connection part on one, or indeed two barges, in what we must assume to be bad weather conditions and the dit sulty in reconnecting, 4 Generally no towrope handling equipment is fitted, this norm for coastal tugs. nfortunately is the 5 Possible unfavourable tracking and therefore handling of the barges in unfavourable weather conditions. 6 Navigating in restricted waters or heavy traffic 7 Impossible, generally, to adjust the length of the intermediate towrope for heavy traffic areas and bad weather. 8 Emergency situations arising on one or both the tows. 9 Perhaps the difficulty of monitoring the condition of the second barge, 10 Possibility of barge over-running and making contact when slowing down, 11 Possibility of one barge flooding and therefore effect the tracking of the other. Crew to have tandem tow experience and the amount of crew on board perhaps increased, A higher than normal safety factor to be utilised for the tug and the tow’s gear.
