Bahasa formal dan informal memiliki tujuan yang berbeda. Nada, pilihan kata-kata dan cara
kata-kata disatukan bervariasi antara dua gaya. Bahasa formal kurang pribadi dari pada bahasa
informal. Ini biasa digunakan saat menulis untuk tujuan profesional atau akademik seperti tugas
universitas. Bahasa formal tidak menggunakan bahasa sehari-hari, kontraksi atau kata ganti
orang pertama seperti 'Saya' atau 'Kamu'.
Bahasa informal lebih kasual dan spontan. Ini digunakan saat berkomunikasi dengan teman atau
keluarga baik secara tertulis maupun dalam percakapan. Ini digunakan saat menulis email
pribadi, pesan teks dan dalam beberapa percakapan bisnis. Nada bahasa informal lebih bersifat
pribadi dari pada bahasa formal.

- Phrasal verbs
Informal: The basketball was blown up for the experiment.
Formal: The basketball was inflated for the experiment.

Informal: The results of the experiment were mixed up.

Formal: The results of the experiment were confused.

- Slang/Colloquialisms
Informal: Teachers still count on students to use correct grammar and punctuation in essays.
Formal: Teachers expect students to use correct grammar and punctuation in essays.
Informal: It was raining cats and dogs.
Formal: It was raining very heavily.

- First person pronouns

Informal: I considered various research methods for the competations.
Formal: Various research methods were considered for the competations.

Informal: During the interview, I asked students about their experiences.

Formal: During the interview, students were asked about their experiences.
