✓The VOR function receives and processes signals from
ground VOR beacons. It calculates the magnetic bearing of
the airplane from the beacon. The VOR function also
decodes the station identifier signal.
✓The instrument landing system (ILS) function supplies
localizer and glideslope guidance information to the flight
crew and autopilot system during approach and landing:
- Localizer - guidance for lateral deviation
- Glideslope - guidance for vertical deviation.
✓The traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS)
function interrogates
other airplanes to get altitude, range, and bearing data. It
uses transponder reply data to determine if the other
aircraft is a collision threat. If a threat
exists, TCAS sends the threat data to the display and crew
alert function (DCAF). The DCAF alerts the flight crew with
visual and/or aural annunciations. If the other airplane has
TCAS, the 2 systems can communicate and give the flight
crews vertical guidance commands to
coordinate airplane movements.
✓ELT( the emergency locator transmitter) system
operates to help find airplane in an emergency situation.
✓TWLU(terminal wireless LAN unit) provides the
capability to uplink/downlink data and software between
airline and airline operation center. The uplinks/downlinks
can also interface with Boeing servers .
✓SATCOM(satellite communications)supplies reliable long
range voice and data communication.
✓HF(high frequency) system is for communication with
ground stations or with other airplanes during long over
water flights.
