Katelyn Knoepke completed a service project at her clinical facility where she worked with dosimetry staff to update treatment planning standard of practice documentation. These documents provide guidance for students and dosimetrists on simulation, beam arrangements, contouring, planning procedures, dose distributions, and paperwork for different treatment sites and techniques. Updating these documents ensured the most current planning guidelines were reflected and additional helpful advice was included. The project allowed Katelyn to contribute meaningfully to the department and review clinical skills learned during her internship by discussing guidelines with experts. Volunteering for such projects demonstrates commitment to the department and profession.

For my service project this semester, I completed a project at my clinical facility. I
worked with the dosimetry staff to update the treatment planning standard of practice (SOP) documentation. These documents are categorized by treatment site as well as planning technique. They are utilized by students and dosimetrists as a reference during the treatment planning process. These were a great resource to me as a student throughout my clinical internship. I worked to ensure that the documents were up to date with the most recent planning guidelines and added other helpful tips and advice that I had received along the way. The SOP planning documents are helpful for both students and dosimetrists. They provide useful information about simulation standards, typical beam arrangements, contouring, treatment planning procedures, desired isodose distributions, and billing/paperwork considerations. As changes in planning techniques and technologies occur, it is important that these documents are updated with the most current information. The addition of helpful planning advice will be an added benefit to future students. This volunteer project allowed me to contribute to the department in a meaningful way. Completing this project also provided me with an excellent review of the clinical skills that I have learned throughout my clinical internship. I was able to revisit my notes and discuss planning guidelines with site group experts. Contributing to a department project helped me to feel involved within the dosimetry group. Volunteering to assist with projects within your work group emphasizes your commitment to your department and profession.
