Foreword
Knowledge of the properties of raw materials and their preparation for
smelting, of blast furnace technology and other methods for primary metal
production - from the technical, economic and environmental points of
view - is necessary for iron manufacture, According to this the book is
divided into the following main parts
— Raw Materials and Their Preparation
— Blast Furnace Process
— Direct and Smelting Reduction Processes
Requirements or raw materials and techniques for meeting them,
technology of blast furnace ironmaking and ways for keeping its
competitive ability as well as alternative methods for hot metal production
are presented and discussed. The authors have undertaken the attempt to
present the past, present and future of the iron-processing technique from
the viewpoint of shift of interest of the steel market and the research from
“better” (better coke, better sinter, better steel and better aggregates)
through “better and cheaper” (coke saving ete.) to “better and cheaper and
environmentally friendly” - in order to ensure a sustainable development.
‘The book is aimed at University students of metallurgy and materials
‘engineering. Some sections, operational and statistical data and numerous
references could also be useful for lecturers and experts in research
institutes and stee! industry.
