User’s Manual 5
INTRODUCTION
Thank you very much for purchasing the Fastmark M6 PAL™ printer. Fastmark M6 comes with rugged
steel construction and durable metal mechanism ensuring the ability to work under extreme industrial
applications.
Fastmark M6 is equipped with a 32-bit RISC processor, with a backlit LCD display for printer status and
operator friendly. The moveable sensor design can meet the wide range of media stock.
PALTM (Print Application Language) is an interpretive page description language that allows the printer to
move beyond the role of normal printers. In addition to supporting traditional text, bar code, and graphic
sequences common to other printers, PALTM also serves as a general purpose programming language that
can be programmed to interpret other languages and raw data streams. This combination of sequence based
printing commands and the programming ability, allows PAL ™ printers to provide unique solutions such
as:
ƒ Intelligently read and interpret legacy data streams without host system programming changes.
Meaning that the printer can added or replace printers without changing the data streams. For
example, this tremendous flexibility permits changing from dot matrix text or card embosser’s to
high quality thermal printing with bar codes without changing the original data from the host.
ƒ PAL™ can be programmed to analyze a data stream, look at the installed media parameters and
print the desired information on the installed media stock.
ƒ Store multiple label formats and databases in the printer.
ƒ Create powerful stand-alone applications that don't require a host or PC connection.
ƒ Create and store PALTM programs in the printer, which allow it to operate even if the host system
goes down.
ƒ Read data from an optional keyboard, scanner, scale, etc. and combine this data with fixed formats
to create powerful labeling solutions.
ƒ Perform math calculations and perform logical decisions within the printer

PALTM Print Application Language presents many exciting possibilities for rethinking the printer’s role
within any industry setting.
The User’s Manual will help you understand basic operations of the printer such as set-up, installation,
configuration and maintenance. For detailed information on the PALTM Print Application Language, please
refer to the PALTM Print Application Language Program Reference Manual. Before reading the
manual you should first identify your printer model. The printer model name is located on the Product
Label, which is on the back of the printer. The printer’s serial number is located on its Rating Label.

PALTM PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Printers featuring PALTM ability can be used in several ways in any given environment. This section
describes three common applications that can use this advanced capability. Details of how to take
advantage of this advanced ability can be found in the PALTM Print Application Language Program
Reference Manual. For help and assistance determining the best way to use this ability in your situation,
please consult your sales representative.

Traditional Printing
This environment represents the most common use of printers. Generally a single print job (PALTM print
sequences) generates a single label. In this role the PALTM interpreter accepts the print job, performs the
required operator processing and prints the label, tag, or ticket. Using a Windows driver in conjunction
with a Windows application program is a typical way to print in this environment. Alternatively, PALTM
print sequences may also be generated by any host application written to take advantage of this powerful
language.
When a PALTM capable printer is used this way, no special “PALTM program” must be loaded on the
printer. Print sequences generated by a Windows driver or host programs are simply sent to the printer
resulting in print output just like traditional printers.

User’s Manual 9
Legacy Data Stream Interpretation
PALTM capable printers uniquely address applications where upgrading to modern cost effective
technology is desired. Often changing software and reprogramming data streams are cost prohibitive,
thus prevents an organization from moving to new printing technologies.
Using a PALTM capable printer solves this problem. In this case a PALTM program is written which
interprets a data stream normally sent to the legacy device being replaced. This program is stored on the
printer and is automatically executed each time the printer is powered on. This program is able to
produce a new label format based on this legacy data. Even though the host computer is sending the
exact same legacy data to the printer, the label format can be completely different. For example the new
format may include bar codes, scaled and/or rotated fonts, lines, logo's etc. Even though the legacy
device being replaced does not support these print abilities, the new label format can.
For example, text only outputs such as produced by a dot-matrix printer or card embosser may now be
presented in a more functional format. Information in the data stream can be reformatted into any size
font in any rotation, or even printed as bar code. This example demonstrates how PALTM capable printer
can replace a legacy print device with no host software changes required.

Standalone/Downtime Applications
PALTM capable printers may be programmed to operate independent of a PC/host connection. This
standalone ability may be used in cases where no PC/host connection is needed or as a fail-safe backup
when the PC/host or network is unavailable.
The Standalone Application program is stored in the printer memory and can accept input from a PS/2
keyboard, bar code scanner, or other serial devices such as an electronic scale. These programs may use
the printer’s LCD to prompt for user input and may also include databases. Unlike other bar code printers
that allow basic static forms to be loaded in the printer, PALTM capable printers provide advanced abilities.
Examples of these advanced capabilities are:
‰ Ability to operate on line from host or off line in stand-alone mode
‰ Ability to range check user input
‰ Ability to combine data from multiple fields into a single bar code
‰ Ability to access database stored in the printer
‰ Ability to perform math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc.)
‰ Ability to perform logical calculations (equal to, less than, greater than, etc.)
Shown below is an example where a stand-alone PALTM application and database is stored in the printer.
Operator input combined with internal database information is used to create a label. For example, this
application could request a part number and physical dimensions of a particular part by prompting for this
information on the printer LCD. After the operator inputs the requested information on the PS/2
keyboard, the printer could calculate the volume, and then based on the part number, lookup the part
description in a database to produce a label.

Loading Media For Peel-off Mode
Peel-Off Mode is the process of separating the printed face stock from its Liner (carrier, backing, etc).
ƒ The intent of this function is, for the user to send a batch of labels to the printer at one time. But, the
printer should print one label and then wait for that label to be removed before printing the next one.
ƒ Peel-Off Mode with the Peel-Off Sensor Option installed will allow the printer to print a batch of
labels one at a time. This allows the user time to remove the printed label before printing the next
one.
ƒ If the Peel-Off Sensor is not installed then the printer will not pause between labels.
To load the media stock for Peel-Off Mode:
1. Before putting the media into the peel mechanism, load media stock normally. This includes
Media Sensor positioning and calibrating the printer to the media stock.
2. Rotate the Print Head Lift Lever to lift the print head off the platen.
3. Remove the first label from the liner. Insert the liner, over the top of the Peel Bar and then under
the Peel Bar and into the gap between the Platen and Peel-Off Roller.
4. If the printer was powered on during this installation, closing of the Print Head Lift Lever will
cause an ERROR: Head Open message to be displayed. Pressing the FEED button will clear the
error message and the printer will move media to the top of the next label. Pressing the PAUSE
button will clear the error without moving the media.

instructions).
7. Close the lower front panel. Pull the liner through the Peel-Off Panel opening.

Figure 23 – Liner Exit Location

User’s Manual 27
Loading Media with Pinch Roller Only
Some media may have a top protective coating on the stock that will cause the media to stick (or slip) on
the print head as it is pulled through the printer. This method assists in pulling media that has a
possibility of slipping through the printer. Allowing the media to be in contact with the platen a longer
time creates an additional pulling force. For the media to do this, the stock must be flexible enough to go
around the platen without causing the printer’s drive mechanism to stall and the leading 1 to 2 inches of
the media edge can not be printed upon. In some cases the paper speed may have to be reduced.

Caution: Only use this method with media that does not have a liner and is very flexable.
Media with a liner will result in the face stock to separate (peeling) from the liner.
Media that is stiff will cause the printer to stall and not pull the stock through the
printer smoothly.
Note: Media using this method will require the leading edge of the stock to always be
between the Pinch Roller and Platen. If the media is reversed beyond this point, the
media will come out from between the Pinch Roller and the Platen.
To load the media stock for usage in this mode:
1. Load media stock normally.
2. Position the Media Sensor in the proper position. See Positioning the Media Sensor
section.
3. Do not calibrate the printer to the media stock at this time.
4. After pulling the stock through the printer, put the leading edge of the media into the gap between
the Platen and Peel-Off Roller.

Loading Media with Cutter Installed
The Cutter option is used to cut individual labels, which assists the user from having to peel off or tear
off labels as they are printed. The Cutter is also a tool that can be used to cut continuous media. This is
especially good where the length of the media changes (example: shelving labels, receipts, etc).

ƒ The Cutter, unless ordered installed, is not an option shipped with the standard printer.
ƒ The Cutter option can not be used with any other output feeding option (Peeler, etc) and requires a
front cover alteration.
ƒ Additional cleaning may be required to keep the cutting device clean from adhesive build up.
Adhesive build up may cause the media to stick in the printer and not cut properly.
ƒ There is a gap between the print head and cutting mechanism that the leading edge of the media must
feed into the cutting slot. The media needs to be stiff and in some cases the paper speed may need to
be reduced.
ƒ It is suggested that the Cutter option should be verified with the media stock before installation of
this option.

To load the media stock for usage in this mode:

1. Load media stock normally.
2. Pushing the leading edge of the stock through the slot in the Cutter Mechanism.

Mechanical Adjustments
The printer has several mechanical adjustments that the user can change to assist in media handling
and print positioning.
Caution: Take care in making these adjustments. Each change will affect the print
quality and positioning of the print.

Ribbon Tension Adjustment Knob

The Ribbon Tension Adjustment Knob offers 6 levels of tension to adjust for different widths
of ribbon. Turn the ribbon tension knob clockwise and you will hear a light click sound as the
gear changes. The level of rewind ribbon is from loose to tight, level 0 to level 5. You will hear a
louder click for level 0.

Figure 31 – Ribbon Tension Adjustment Knob

User’s Guide
Print Head Pressure Adjustment Knob
The Print Head Pressure Adjustment Knobs are used to fine tune print quality for different
thickness of media. There is one knob on top of each spring that applies pressure on the printhead
(right and left side). Turning the knobs changes the pressure the print head applies to the platen
roller.
♦ Full width media and ribbons: Make sure that the indicators on top of the knobs are in the
same position. Unequal positions (pressure) may cause the media or ribbon to move side to
side.
♦ Narrow width media: Adjusting only one of these knobs may prevent the media from
moving side to side. Example: 1” stock may have the left knob set for 3 and the right set for
2. Make necessary adjustments until the media feeds straight through the printer.

Print Head Pressure Knobs

Figure 32 – Print Head Pressure Adjustment Knobs

50
Print Head Burn Line Adjustment Knob
The Print Head Adjustment Knobs are used to move the print head’s burn line forward or
backwards. This may assist in fine tuning print quality for different thickness of media.
♦ Turning the knobs adjust the print head’s burn line forward or backward as it relates to the
platen roller.
♦ Media thicker than 0.20mm may cause the print head burn line to not be directly over the
platen or in the optimized position. First increase the print head pressure (See Print Head
Pressure Adjustment Knobs). If this does not correct the issue adjust the Print Head Burn
Line Knobs counter-clockwise to move the print head burn line forward (towards the front of
the printer) then print again. Continue to adjust and test print, as necessary until the image is
clear.

Print Head Burn Line Knobs

Figure 33 – Print Head Burn Line Adjustment Knobs

Caution:
♦ Make sure any adjustment is done to both knobs equally.
♦ Incorrectly adjusting of these knobs can lead to poor print quality and may cause damage to
the printer.
♦ Adjusting the print head burn line unevenly will result in the printer not printing horizontal
line across the media.
♦ Before making any adjustment verify that the media stock is feeding straight through the
printer. This could also cause the horizontal line to not be straight.
The default location of the print head burn line is set for general purpose printing media (plain
paper and paper thickness less than 0.20mm).
Note: The print head moves 0.7 mm for each 360-degree turn.

Troubleshooting
Printing a Configuration Page
The configuration print is really the Print Feature function. When preformed at power up, it
is a method of verifying that the printer functions and will print on the installed stock. By
printing the feature listing it can be used to determine the current user setting and if a PAL™
application is loaded into memory.
The full configuration can only be printed on 4-inch wide media.
To perform a Feature Print:
1. Install the media and/or ribbon.
2. Press and hold down the FEED button while powering on the printer.
3. When the printer begins moving media release the FEED button.
4. The printer will begin printing the Print Feature information.
If the printer moves paper but does not print:
¾ If using Direct Thermal stock, verify that correct side is installed properly.
¾ Verify that the stock installed does not require a ribbon.
¾ Verify that the ribbon is installed in the correct orientation (ink side down as it goes
through the printer).
5. Once the printer prints the configuration it will return to normal operating mode.

Printing the Self Test
The “Print Test” feature can only be accessed from the Setup Menu. This test will print
multiple barcodes. It will adjust the number of bar codes it prints depending upon the
measured length of the installed label.
The full test can only be printed on 4 x 6 inch media.
To perform a Print Test:
1. Install the media and/or ribbon.
2. Access the Setup Menu mode.
3. Scroll to the “Print Test” displayed feature.
4. Then press the FEED button.

ASCII Mode
The ASCII Emulation mode is a line printer language. Only printable ASCII table characters
are allowed. The printer also honors carriage return, line feeds and form feed control codes.
The printer will print characters at 10cpi and up to the width of the label. Any character after
that will be truncated.
This is line Printer Mode.
The printer only prints ASCII text characters.

Figure 37 – ASCII Mode Sample

User’s Guide
Display Mode
The Display Emulation mode is a combination of HEX mode and the ASCII mode. The
printer will print only ASCII characters but will print control codes as super/sub script
characters. The printer will print like ASCII mode but will wrap lines longer than the width
of the label and also honor carriage return, line feeds and form feed control codes.
This mode is typically easier for a user to read when trying to determine what is causing the printer
not to print, instead of trying to read the HEX print mode.

This is line Pr • inter Mode. ••

The printer only prints ASCII text characters. ••

Figure 38 – Display Mode Sample

Hex Print Mode

The Hex Print Mode (Dump Mode) is an emulation mode that is also a troubleshooting mode
used to:
• Verify the Printer is receiving data.
The printer prints any data received in ASCII 8th bit format. It does not execute any of the received
commands. Even if the data is in an incorrect format or incorrect printer language, the printer will
print any and all information received on the installed media.
• Shows the user what data is being sent to the printer.
All printed data is in HEX and ASCII formats as show by the sample. ASCII printing is done on one
side of the label, and the hexadecimal representation of the ASCII is on the other. To interpret the
data the reader will have to consult the Programmer’s Manual for the specific printer language.

The Hex Print Mode should only be used with 4-inch wide media installed. Using a stock
narrower than this will result in some of the information not printing on the media.

Appendix B: Interface Specification
This appendix presents the serial, parallel and USB interface specifications. The serial and parallel
specifications include pin assignments; protocols and detailed information about how to properly
pin the cable for connection to your host or terminal.

USB
The USB interface on the product is V1.1. specification and further information is not required.

PS2 connection
The PS2 connection on the printer (if option is present) can be used with many standard keyboards
and keyboard wedge scanners.
Keyboards: See the printer supplier for keyboards that have been tested and verified to work
with the printer.

Keyboard Wedge Scanners: Scanners can transmit data to the printer at various rates. You
may need to change the output speed of the scanner to match the printer. To change the output
speeds of the scanner, see the Scanner’s “User Manual.”

Note: The installed PAL™ application must be programmed to use this port for data.

Parallel Port
Communication to a host using the parallel interface is simpler than the serial port. The parallel
pin configurations typically are the same with all parallel cables.

The parallel port is a standard 36-pin Centronics. Its pin assignments are listed as following.

Pin Direction Definition Pin Direction Definition

1 In /STROBE 13 Out SELECT
2 In Data 1 14 GND
3 In Data 2 15 N/C
4 In Data 3 16 - Ground
5 In Data 4 17 - Ground
6 In Data 5 18 NC
7 In Data 6 19 to 30 - Ground
8 In Data 7 31 NC
9 In Data 8 32 Out /Fault
10 Out /ACK 33-35 GND
11 Out BUSY 36 NC
12 Out PE

NOTE: If the Internal Network option is installed, then the parallel port is not available.

62
Serial Interface
Serial pin configuration is not held to a specific standard, therefore the below information will
show the printer’s pin definition, direction of pin information, and the interface pin number.
In most cases the host will monitor certain pins for determining if the printer is on and ready to
receive data.

Serial communication is also controlled by serial protocol (Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity, and Stop
Bits). The printer’s communication protocol must match the host’s communication protocol. Any
deviation could produce a communication error or unexpected results.

Pin # Pin Description Direction of Signal

1 +5 v
2 TxD (Transmit Data) To Host
3 RxD (Receive Data) From Host
4 DSR (Data Set Ready) From Host
5 GND (signal ground)
6 Ready To Host
7 DSR (same as pin 4) From Host
8 Ready (same as pin 6) To Host
9 N/C

Sample Cable Configuration

Caution: Do not connect pin 1 in the cable. Doing so will put +5 voltage on the pin. Use this
pin only when connecting an external device, such as a scanner, that requires power to
be supplied by the printer.
Note: The PCB can be altered to move +5 volts on pin 9 instead of pin 1. Only an authorized
Service Center should make this alteration.

User’s Guide
Appendix C: Installing or Upgrading a PAL™ App

Upgrading Main PAL™ Code

PAL™ Main Code consists of two firmware; Boot Code and PAL™ code.

¾ Boot Code
¾ PAL™ Code is the main operating function of the printer.

An authorized Service Technician should only do loading the Main PAL™ operating system.

Installing a PAL™ Application

A PAL™ application is an application that is stored in the printer that is used to interpret inputted
information. That information can come from a data stream (host device), keyboard, scanner, etc.
If a PAL™ application is loaded into the printer upon power up the printer will:
¾ Display the PAL™ application number.
¾ Load the PAL™ application into the RUN memory.
¾ Upon completion of loading, begin to execute instructions according to the application.
¾ Typically it will display “Waiting for Data” if waiting for a data stream to be sent to it.
¾ Once the PAL™ application is running the printer will IGNORE or PRINT
INCORRECTLY any data that is not in the applications expected format.

Loading a PAL:
™ Loading a PAL™ application will overwrite any PAL™ application currently loaded in the
printer, if it is sent to the same DRIVE.
™ Any PAL™ application that is not compiled will not be saved into FLASH memory and will
be deleted at power down.
™ Compiled PAL™ applications must be designated to a specific Drive (A, B, or C) in the
printer, to determine which drive the PAL™ application is loaded into.

To load a PAL application into the printer:

1. Power off the printer.

2. Hold down the MENU button and power on the printer.
3. Send the new PAL application directly to the printer.
4. Once the PAL application is loaded, cycle power on the printer.
NOTE: If the printer does not indicate DONE followed by a BYTE count the PAL was
not saved into FLASH. Contact the PAL™ programmer for correction.
5. Verify the PAL application is loaded by performing a Print Feature
function.

64
Appendix D: Internal Network Option
The Fastmark M6 series printers can be equipped with or without an internal network interface.

Internal Network Interface:

™ Network interface receives power from the printer. No second power cable required.
™ Network interface configuration is achieved by using the supplied Network CD.
™ Setup can only be done through the customer’s network.
™ Even though the parallel port is visible, it is not functional as a parallel port.
™ Network connection lights cannot be seen outside of the printer.

For details on the Internal Network setup and functionality, see the Network CD that came with the
printer.

The below figure is the Fastmark M6 printer with an installed Internal Network Interface.

Figure 40 – Internal Network Interface Connector

Reminder: Even though the parallel port may be visible, when the Internal
Network Interface is installed the parallel port is disabled. If any data is
transmitted on the external parallel interface connector it will result in incorrect
operation of the printer.
