Country: The Republic of Ghana

Committee: Security Council

Topic: Militarization of the arctic
Delegate: Camila Rubí Ruiz Torres

Good morning fellow delegates and honorable chair, we are gathered here today to discuss
the subject matter that is militarization in the arctic. It is acknowledged that many countries
such as the Russian Federation, The United States, Canada, Norway and Denmark have
established large military bases in the northern polar region by virtue of the constant hunt for
either domination, power or simply protection. In 1996 the Arctic Council was established
between the eight Arctic states; this council has established a forum that still, to this day, has
provided peace and order. What we look for currently is to keep it that way, and retain
countries from exceeding their limits as is what many are doing.

Ghana does not have an official position on the militarization of the arctic as it does not have
any direct territorial or strategic interests in the Arctic region. However, the delegation of
Ghana acknowledges the disputes that are occurring and is open to helping delegations such
as the United States and Canada. Ghana, like any country, has a set of values that include
democracy, governance, unity, respect, environmental protection, and sustainable
development. Ghana is one of the most economically stable countries in West Africa,
possessing valuable natural resources like gold, oil, cocoa, and minerals. Ghana believes that
militarization of the Arctic should be approached cautiously and in a manner that promotes
peace, stability, and cooperation among nations.

Ghana calls for the security council to support the peaceful and responsible utilization of
Arctic resources for the betterment of all nations. The delegation of Ghana proposes the
following solutions:
1. Early Warning and Crisis Management: Create guidelines for early warning
systems and crisis management strategies to prevent conflicts or misunderstandings in
the region.
2. Protection of the environment: Enhance international regulations and agreements to
protect the Arctic environment from military activities, such as oil spills, pollution,
and habitat destruction.
