ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

1. Introduction
ApRe module is a protection system device that is certified against unintended car movement appropriate to EN 81-1+A3
standard which operates with ADrive.
There is an additional locking system on overspeed governors that are appropriate to EN 81-1+A3 standard. Overspeed governor
stays in locked position when the system is de-energized. Meanwhile, if an unintended movement occurs (up or down), safety
gear becomes active and stops the car in the allowed distances. ApRe module controls coil of the locking system on overspeed
governor. ADrive checks the operation of ApRe module and locking system. ADrive permanently blocks the elevator in the
event of an error on ApRe module or locking system. This state does not change even if the electricity is turned off and on again.
A qualified staff should interfere to operate the lift again.

supply, a minimum 10W of power should be added in order to operate ApRe module..
ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

Battery (+, -): Battery input

Connect 24V battery for 24 VDC coil or 12V battery for 12 VDC coil. While doing the capacity calculation for the battery, the
duration which the coil is fed from the battery should be taken into account. Battery capacity in Ah’s will be at least 1/5th of the
coil current (in A’s). Thus for the battery, 1.2Ah capacity will be enough for ApRe module.
B.Magnet (+, -): Locking coil of overspeed governor supply output
Maximum 6A coil can be connected to 12 or 24 VDC voltage. A backward diode is used on PCB for protection.
SFD, 10B: Safety circuit input (SFD: phase, 10B: neutral)
Safety circuit can be connected to 180-230VAC voltage. If landing doors are open, unlocked or brake contactor is released, SFD
input should de de-energized. 10B (neutral) should be connected the coils of motor ontactors.
Monitor (1, 2): ApRe module automatic check output
This outputs usage is optional. Supply relay of overspeed governor locking coil on ApRe module is normally closed contact (the
outpu is short circuit when the relay is released). This is used for monitoring ApRe module.
Trip (RT1, RT2): Test switch connection of overspeed governor
Usage is optional. Normally closed contact switch can be connected. RT1 and RT2 terminals must be bridged if this connection
is not used. Otherwise, locking coil can not be energized.
Rescue (RSC1, RSC2): Connection of overspeed governor emergency switch
Usage is optional. Normally open contact switch can be connected. RSC1 and RSC2 terminals must stay open. Locking coil
will be kept energized as long as the terminals are bridged.
6.2. ADrive
PIN: ApRe module and automatic monitoring of overspeed governor locking system
A normally close contact of the solenoid switch (closed when the solenoid power is off) must be connected to the programmable
input PIN on ADrive. There should be signal on this input when locking system of overspeed governor is in locked position. +15
named terminal on ADrive can be used as common signal. It’s a programmable input. Necessary function should ne programmed
for ApRe module (See section 9.4).
RFA, RFO: Relay output of brake contactor
Brake contactor should be fed from the output of ADrive brake relay (normally open contact). ADrive activates the relay in order
to open the brake. Maximum 10A/250VAC or 10A/30VDC can be switched to the contact of the relay.
6.3. Appropriate Section of Cable
Power, Battery, B.Magnet, Trip and Rescue connections should be appropriate to current of overspeed governor locking coil.
SFD is the connection of 10B safety circuit. All cable sections should be at least 0,75 mm² in order to ensure menchanical
strength.

ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

7.2. Announcement
Battery connection to ApRe module should be made for releasing the locking coil of overspeed governor with a delay, while the
lift is travelling. If the battery is defective or not connected, ApRe module will give a sound alert.

8. Timing Settings of ADrive and Control Card

8.1. Startup Operation
After closing the doors and activating the motor contactors (KPA, KPB), control card activates the brake contactor (KFR) of
ADrive. With the activation of the brake contactor, ApRe de-energizes locking coil of overspeed governor without a delay and
releases the locking system of overspeed governor. Then, ADrive opens the brakes and elevator starts to move.
8.2. Normal Stopping Operation
1 Second after the car lands to the floor and the brake contactor is off, ApRe module cuts the power of overspeed governor
locking coil and stops the system. For the right timing, after the brake is closed and the system is stopped, motor contactors
should be released and doors must be opened. This timing is shown below:

8.3. Required Parameter Settings for Cabin to Stop Normally

Control Card Arkel ARL-500
Parameter settings • ARL-500 menu > “Sytem settings” > “Contactor drop delay after stopping” = “With feedback”
Description ARL-500 de-energizes the main contactors when a signal comes from ADrive. ADrive gives this signal
1 second after it de-energizes the brake contactor. Doors will open after solenoid is de-energized and the
stopping part of the over speed governor is activated.
Control Card Arkel ARL-300/ARL-200 or other control cards
Parameter settings • Control card menu > contactor delay (*) = to be adjusted to a sufficient value
• ADrive menu > “1-TRAVEL CURVE” > “1.15-MBRAKE OFF” = “0.5 S.”
*: The name of this parameter is “CONTACTOR DELAY” in ARL-300 and “RP DELAY” in ARL-200.
Description The “Contactor Delay” is the time between the stop signal comes to the lift controller and the dropping
of the main contactors. This parameter shall be set to a value that the main contactors drop at least 1
second after brake contactor drops. Doors will open after solenoid is de-energized and the stopping part
of the over speed governor is activated.
If the monitoring function of ApRe is enabled, ADrive measures the drop time between the brake
contactors and the main contactors. ADrive gives “CONTACTOR DELAY IS NOT ENOUGH” error if
this period is less than 1 second. Contactor delay time parameter should be reset from the control card,
when this error appears on ADrive screen.
8.4. Emergency Stop Operation
ApRe module keeps feeding the locking coil of overspeed governor 1 seconds more after a power failure or when an interruption
occurs (e.g. when a landing door is opened with a key by relevant staff) in the safety circuit while the car is moving. After the
cabin is stopped by motor brakes, locking system of overspeed governor becomes activated. Thus, safety system of the cabin
(safety gear) is prevented from unnecessary activation.

9. Automatic Inspection of ApRe Module and Locking System of Overspeed Governor

9.1. Definition
! Warning: The software version of ADrive should be V8.88 or higher. Software update should be done to old version devices.
ADrive controls the operation of locking coil of overspeed governor and ApRe module. In the event of a failure, ADrive will
block the lift permanently (See section 9.2). It is only possible with a special reset operation to operate the elevator (See section
9.6).
9.2. Permanent Blocking Error
According to standard EN 81-1 + A3, when automatic monitoring system has decected an error, a qualified staff should interfere
to operate the elevator again. This error shouldn't be improved even when the system is resetted or turning off and turning on the
electricity again. This type of fault is defined as “permanent blocking error” in this document.
9.3. Connection of Self Monitoring Function
Normally closed switch of locking system of overspeed governor should be connected to PIN input on ADrive. When the locking
system of overspeed governor is in locked position the PIN signal must be on. +15 named terminal on ADrive can be used as a
signal partner.
9.4. Enabling/Disabling the Self Monitoring Function
PIN input of ADrive is a programmable input. PIN can be programmed to different functions. To assign the “self monitoring”
function, the following settings should be made:
ADrive menu > “11-ADVANCED SET.” > “11.4-PIN Func.” = “APRE mon. input”
To enable the ApRe monitoring function, following settings should be made:
ADrive menu > “11- ADVANCED SET.” > “11.14-APRE mon.” = “ENABLED”
! Warning: Self monitoring function should be enabled after commissioning ApRe module and overspeed governor. Otherwise,
ADrive will give "ApRe error" continuously, and the lift will bee blocked.
9.5. Operation of Self Monitoring Function
9.5.1. Self Monitoring at Startup
After activating brake contactor (KFR), ADrive waits the PIN (PIN = should be 15VDC) input to be de- activated within a certain
period. If the signal is not de-activated at the end of this period, ADrive gives "APRE MON. ERROR". The error will be corrected
automatically at the first time but a second error within 10 travels will block the system permanently (See section 9.2).
ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

9.5.2. Self Monitoring at Stop

After releasing brake contactor (KFR), ADrive waits the PIN (PIN = should be 15VDC) input to be activated within a certain
period. If there is no signal at the end of this period, ADrive gives "APRE MON. ERROR". The error will be corrected when
the signal is activated. But a second error within 10 travels will block the system permanently (See section 9.2).

9.6. Erasing Permanent Block Error

Permanent block error can not be erased by pressing ESC button on ADrive or by switching off and on the electricity. Following
settings should be made to erase this error:
ADrive menu > “5-FAULT HISTORY” > “5.2-Clear F.list”

10. Emergency Rescue

For any reason, if the car is stuck between two floors, locking system of overspeed governor should be released in order to
move the cabin. For this purpose, the connection shown in figure-4 (SRSC button/switch connection) can be made to RSC1
and RSC2 terminals of ApRe module. RSC1 and RSC2 connection should be open circuit in normal operation .
! Warning: This connection is not required if the rescue operation could be done by hand terminal.
! Warning: While rescuing with manual brake release, if the car moves without this connection, safety gear will be activated.
! Warning: When terminals RSC1 and RSC2 are bridged, overspeed governor locking coil becomes activated (ApRe module
will bridge the RL1 relay).
• For manual brake rescue, the following procedure should be followed in case of emergency:
• Switch off the main switch of the control panel (locking coil of overspeed governor will be energized with a battery),
• Make the bridge connection of RSC1 and RSC2 terminals (related button/switch is activated),
• Bring the car to the nearest floor by opening the brakes,
• Disable the RSC1 and RSC2 bridge connection (related button/switch is de-activated),
• Save the passangers,
• Switch on the main switch of the control panel.

11. Locking Test of Overspeed Governor

STRP (button/switch) connection shown in figure-4 can be made to terminals RT1 and RT2 to lock the overspeed governor.
This connection should be done only for test purpose. RT1 and RT2 terminals should be short circuit in normal operation .
! Warning: This connection should be used only for test purpose! If this connection becomes open while the car is moving,
safety gear will be activated because locking coil will be released without a delay.

! Warning: Before unintended car movement test, the stopping distance of protection system should be theoretically calculated
assuming the worst conditions. This calculation is described in section 13. The UCM test must be done if only calculated stopping
distances are appropriate to the distances mentioned in section 14 and these stopping distances should be confirmed in practice.
In case of unintended car movements, the protection system (ApRe, overspeed governor and safety gear) should be tested under
worst conditions (with the heaviest load condition and the failure of drive/control system with maximum acceleration). The
causes of UCM could be explained as machine brake failure, in case of overload or control system fault during relevelling.
For the heaviest load situation:
• Move the empty car upward from the top of the shaft and
• Move the fully loaded cabin downward from the lowest position of the shaft.
Drive or control system failure:
• Opening the machine brakes manually if there is no relevelling in the system,
• Simulation with ADrive by a full torque startup if there is relevelling in the system (See section 15).

13. Periodic Test (EN 81-1+A3 Appendix E)

Tests must be performed which is described in section 12 (Final Test).

14. Stopping Distance Calculation before Unintended Car Movement (UCM) Test
Before performing the UCM test, the stopping distance of the protection system must be calculated theorically considering worst
conditions (the worst load condition and with the effect of maximum acceleration of drive/control system). The calculated
stopping distances should be appropriate with the distances shown in section 14.
Locking coil of overspeed governor is de energized even during automatic relevelling in ApRe system. Therefore the following
datas are not included in the stopping distance.
• Doors open transaction zone length (mm)
• UCM sensing device response time (ms)
• UCM activation device response time (ms)
For the worst case scenario: Empty car moves upward at the top of the well or full loaded car moves downward at the bottom of
the well and, ADrive running the motor with full torque should be considered if there is relevelling in the system (See section
16).
The following table shows the curve of how the car stops during UCM considering the worst case scenario:
Velocity (m/s)

Va

Xosg Xsga Xsgb

Time (s)
Xosg: Maximum distance for overspeed governor sheave to keep spinning when the locking coil of overspeed governor is de-
energized (in mm). This distance varies according to the type of overspeed governor.
Xsga: Maximum triggering distance (in mm) of safety gear. This distance varies according to the type of safety gear.
aa: Maximum acceleration of the car (in m/s2). Acceleration of the worst load imbalance should be calculated. If there is automatic
relevelling in the system, ADrives acceleration effect must be taken into account.
Va: Velocity of the car when safety gear brakes are actuated. This is calculated as follows:

Va = 2 * aa * ( Xosg + Xsga )
ab: Minimum braking acceleration of safety gear (in m/s2). This data varies according to the type of safety gear. Acceleration
may vary according to the direction of the car.
Xsgb: Maximum braking distance of safety gear (in mm). This is calculated as follows:
Xsgb = Va2 2 * ab
Total maximum stopping distance during UCM is calculated as follows:
Xucm = Xosg + Xsga + Xsgb
ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

15. Post Test Control of Unintended Car Movement (UCM)

Allowed distances for the car to be stopped by UCM protection are given below:

Car
Shaft
Landing

Car apron
Car entrance Figure-5

• The car should not exceed 1.2 m from the landing level (This distance is 1 m where the clearance height of car door is
2 m).
• The landing sill and the lowest part of the car apron shall not exceed 200 mm.
• The free distance from car sill to landing door lintel shall not be less than 1 m.
• These values shall be obtained with any load in the car, up to 100 % of rated load.
15.1. Full Torque Test Function of ADrive for Unintended Car Movement
The stopping distance in case of UCM shall be tested under worst case conditions taking into account the worst failure in drive
system (e.g. max. torque, max. acceleration, max. speed). In this mode, ADrive applies maximum torque to motor in the given
direction which causes maximum acceleration in the elevator. The maximum current value can be applied to the motor in this
mode is the value set by parameter 11.13 current limit. In addition, overspeed, low speed, motor overload and ApRe monitoring
error detection are disabled.
This function is only available for firmware version <=V8.81 and for closed loop operations (with encoder).
To activate the function, adjust "13.1-Drive Mode" < "Full Torque Test" from the ADrive menu. This setting does not appear in
the open loop. Since this test is not permanent, if ADrive is reset, this parameter will return to its "Normal" setting.
ADrive system does not check low speed, overspeed, motor overload and ApRe monitoring errors while the function is active.
In this mode, ADrive applies maximum torque to motor in the given direction which causes maximum acceleration in the
elevator. This parameter should be set to two times of the motor current value at the end of auto tuning process. The maximum
current value can be applied to the motor in this mode is the value set by parameter 11.13 current limit.

16. Maintenance, Device Replacement and Software Update

16.1. ApRe
ApRe module does not require any maintenance. Due to card replacements, it shall be verified that the new card is working
properly according to the tests described in sections 12.3 and 12.4.
16.2. ADrive
See ADrive manual for necessary maintenances in ADrive device. Controls and tests should be performed as described in sections
12.3 and 12.5 after a software update in ADrive. Controls and tests should be performed as described in sections 12.3 and 12.5
after device replacements also.
16.3. Battery
Battery is not included in the ApRe system but a battery connection is required to operate the system. Estimated battery life is
about 3-5 years specified by manufacturers. This duration may vary according to the brand, storage condition (temperature and
humidity) and the frequency of use (number of charges and discharges) of batteries. In any case, it is recommended that to replace
the batteries with the new ones in every 3 years.

17. Troubleshooting
Problem 1 Overspeed governors locking system is constantly in the locked position (not released).
1. The Pow. led should be lit on ApRe module. If the led is unlit, check the 12V/24V DC supply (Power terminals) and battery
connection (Battery terminals).
2. When Rescue connection is made (RSC1 and RSC2 terminals are bridged), check the locking systems status.
If locking system is not released:
• Check Trip connection. Normally RT1 and RT2 terminals should be short circuit.
• Check F1 glass fuse (7A) on ApRe module.
• Check locking coil of overspeed governor connection (B.Magnet terminals).
• Check if locking coil of overspeed governor voltage is in appropriate value.
If locking system is released:
• Check if ADrive or lift controller is giving an error.
• Make sure that the doors are all closed/locked. 135 circuit should be closed.
• Make sure that the brake contactor (KFR) is activated while moving.
• Check SFD and 10B terminal connections.
3. After performing the steps above, if the error still does not improve, remove the B.Magnet terminals and connect the DC
supply to locking coil directly. If the locking system releases, it means that the ApRe module is faulty and if the system does
not release, it means that locking system is faulty.
Problem 2 Locking system of overspeed governor is released constantly (locking does not happen).
1. Check if locking system works when Trip (RT1 and RT2) terminals are unplugged.
If locking system does not switch to the locked position when Trip terminals are unplugged:
• Check the locking system of overspeed governor’s connection (B.Magnet terminals).
If locking system switches to the locked position when Trip terminals are unplugged:
• Ckeck Rescue connection. Normally RSC1 and RSC2 terminals should be open circuit.
• Make sure that the brake contactor (KFR) is off when there is no movement.
• Check SFD and 10B terminal connections. There should not be any voltage at SFD and 10B terminals.
2. After performing the steps above, if the error still does not improve, remove the B.Magnet terminals. If locking system
switches to the locked position, it means that the ApRe module is faulty. If not, it means that locking system is faulty.
Problem 3 Safety gear is activated when safety circuit is cut while the elevator is moving.
1. Check that the system is operating correctly while the elevator is not moving. Locking coil of overspeed governor goes off
1 second after mechanical brake contactor is off.
2. If there is a problem only in emergency stop, the the elapsed time to stop the car may be longer than 1 second.
Problem 4 While the car is moving, safety gear activates when mains power is gone.
ApRe module can not be fed from battery in case of a power failure.
1. Check battery connection (Battery terminals)
2. Low battery voltage, battery capacity is not enough or battery/batteries may be faulty.
Problem 5 ADrive gives “CONTACTOR DELAY IS NOT ENOUGH” error.
The time between the brake contactor to drop and the main contactor to drop is less than 1 second. The delay of main contactor
to drop should be extended from the lift controller (see section 8.3)
Problem 6 ADrive gives “APRE CHECK INPUT IS NOT HIGH” error.
ADrive checks locking system of overspeed governor before activating the main contactor. If the system is not in locked
position, ADrive gives “APRE CHECK INPUT IS NOT HIGH” error and does not move the car. Apply the solution described
in "Problem 2".
Problem 7 ADrive gives “APRE MON. ERROR PERMANENT ERR NO: 32” error.
The automatic control function of ApRe and overspeed governor gives error. This fault does not block the system permanently.
The error is resetted after signal turns back to normal.
1. Check the connection of locking coil switch of overspeed governor (ADrive PIN Terminal). Normally the connection of
closed contact should be made. When the coil is de-energised, PIN signal must be active. After the coil is energized, PIN
signal must be off.
2. If the locking system of overspeed governor is always in locked position, apply the solution described in “Problem 1”.
3. If the locking system of overspeed governor is in released position, apply the solution described in “Problem 1”.
Problem 8 ADrive gives “APRE MON. PERMANENT ERR.: 34” error.
The automatic control function of ApRe and overspeed governor gives error. This fault blocks the system permanently. Even
when the signal returns to normal or the system is switched off and switched on again, the error will not be resetted. Appy the
solution described in “Problem 7”.
To erase the permanent error, adjust “5-FAULT HISTORY” > “5.2-Clear F.list” from the menu of ADrive after detecting and
correcting the failure.
Problem 9 ApRe module gives sound alarm (Err. led is blinking).
1. Check Battery connection (Battery terminals).
2. The battery/batteries may be defective.
ApRe User Manual and Test Instructions V1.10

Problem 10 Err. led is blinking on ApRe (no sound alarm).

1. Check the supply connections (Power terminals).
2. There is low battery voltage or battery/batteries may be faulty.
Problem 11 The battery/batteries are not charging (Chr. led is always off, no beep).
1. Check the suppy voltage or the battery voltage.
2. Battery/batteries may be faulty.
