Hey! How has your journey been in discovering more about computer science and
computer engineering? Did it somehow help you decide to stay in the BSIT program, or
are you now having second thoughts about transferring to either ComSci or CpE? Brace

Information Technology.

The 30 Most Influential Computer Scientists Alive Today

On June 23, 2020, Kelly Fox published a list on the Computer Science Degree Hub
website featuring living computer scientists. These computer scientists are responsible for
providing impactful solutions in the modern world. They were chosen based on the
following criteria.

Leadership: Each of the people on the list is a leader in their field, and most have
either founded or run a successful technology company. Many of these scientists
are also current or former academics at top universities.

Applicability: While most of the ideas and products credited to the people on this
list are used by large percentages of the world's population, those whose

Key Concepts

It was in the 1990s when computing degree programs such as the Bachelor of Science in
Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), and
Bachelor of Science in Information Management (BSIM) were given updated guidelines
through the CMO 60 series of 1996, also known as the Updated Policies and Standards
for Information Technology Education (IT).

Sir Llego’s Computing Journey

In June 2000, I enrolled in the BSCS program at the University of Mindanao. During that
time, I didn't feel the pressure of college life as all our subjects were part of the general
education curriculum for the entire school year. The following year, I transferred to the
University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) and continued my studies in computer
science. I was somewhat taken aback by the intensity of the lesson delivery and the
school's culture. After two (2) years, I switched to the BSIT program because I realized
that computer science wasn't a good fit for me.

The Institute of Computing (IC) is the program that oversees BSCS and BSIT at USeP.
The faculty members mostly come from Ateneo de Davao University and the University of
the Immaculate Concepcion. During my time at the university, I had the opportunity to
share subjects with computer science students. Our final project (the Capstone Project in
the new curriculum) was composed of both computer science and information technology
students.

I noticed that the most apparent difference between CS and IT is the number of
Mathematics courses in the CS curriculum. Learners are also often confused about the
distinction between CS and IT, which has contributed to discrimination. There have been
times when they think that students who have failed in CS are transferred to IT, or that
only intelligent students can succeed in CS.
